Assuming some of the songs from the list came from the radio station WBBM-FM, the station used to carry a format defined as "The Mellow Sound of Chicago." During that era, they were playing contemporary music but without the harder-edged titles — quite a ton of obscure songs with very little presence to this day.

The longer this goes, the more I'm starting to fear that this one will likely remain lost. I hope that's not the case, though...

So, if what you have is a clip from WBBM/Chicago, that would mean there was a lot of competition for the station to need to personalize themselves with. This could mean, either highly-researched catalog titles...or, music sourced from people trying to find diamonds from the sands of other shores. Radio stations get lots of promo records that never get anywhere, and never even get heard, unless there's somebody there who is looking for something like a discovery. Or even...local musicians, getting the rare airplay on their local station!

If you really want to play this detective game, perhaps you need to go beyond recognizing the artist and title, and focus on what the circumstances may have led to a major station in a major radio market was doing, playing unfamiliar music. If you narrow that down, you may be closer to finding people who can help you.

For instance, I can see my wife, who was working her first radio gig at a military base in 1975, rifling through a stack of AFRTS-supplied records, locating a song just like this sounds, selecting it for airplay, with no idea of its' origin or why it was on an AFRTS disc in the first place. This is probably the sort of mindset that could have led to this particular song ending up on that particular tape of that particular station on that particular day. Random.

Chicago had quite a foothold in the recording industry, with a lot of jingle work and local musicians and other commercial music interests finding their ways into studios. This could be a clue.

I might contact a few of the more-entrenched NPR or public radio people in the Chicago area, tell them that this was from when WBBM was playing Beautiful Music in that era...and where personnel working there at the time, might have come up with such a random track to play on-air. Who knows, you may learn more, coming at this from another direction.

This is the wildest of guesses, but the style reminds me a little of Dando Shaft, an early-'70s folk band from the UK. The vocalist sounds quite different though; maybe they had more than one?

I've checked Discogs for any signs of the song in their earlier work. No dice, though. :shake:

    bumping this, too.

I feel like if these kinds of threads get bumped enough on here it will eventually lead to an answer, since the forum seems very active and the long sought after "I Keep Looking" was solved surprisingly fast after being posted on here.

I've been spending hours and hours and hours looking through Discogs for this. Currently on '1970'! Not giving up.

Me, too. It's really a shock that this one has proven to be so difficult to find... and it's one of the songs I like the most from this genre. Let's hope 2022 will bring this one a solve!

It might also not be on discogs at all like some songs have proven to be. It would be a bit surprising with this though since it was taken from the radio way back when. Jim Dawson's song was on there before we found it, right?

Bert Keely ? Maybe from a group he was in before his 1979 solo debut album " Take Me Home " ?

If you like this style of 1970s psych folk you might want to hear Bert Keely , from San Francisco. My faves on " Take Me Home " are
    " Mari's Song " and " Ocean ," beautiful pacifica.

All tracks free for the listening here
