I am looking to start purchasing from Discogs since most CDs I want are cheap and generally a pain to find at traditional retail stores as well as eBay and Amazon Australia being fairly overpriced for what I would like to pay. Is there a proper way to go about buying items from Discogs like should I message a seller before placing an order with him or can I just add items to my cart and place the order as I would on Amazon?

Sorry if this sounds really dumb but I am fairly new to Discogs and really don't have an idea on how it works.

It's pretty straightforward. I haven't bought a lot on Discogs, but yes, basically it's similar to ordering on Amazon.

What about shipping since most sellers don't seem to include shipping on their listed items?

As far as I remember, when you order you are quoted the shipping price. You can always not continue with your order if you feel it's too high.

That's not been my experience. It's usually the link on the right called + shipping when in a list with other sellers that have the same disc or the View Shipping and Payment Information link on the right when viewing individual CD listings.

What's your Discogs name in case you message me so I don't charge you tracked shipping, read insane Canada Post rates, if you're a newbie.

    This is not quite right.

The shipping charges are not always automatically added when you place your order. Sometimes they are, but when they're not, the seller will send you an invoice with those charges added. That may be what you were thinking of.

But one may not place an order and then cancel it because they feel the charge is too high. That will leave the buyer open to negative feedback for non-payment (unless the seller is WILLING to cancel), and Discogs will not side with the buyer. That's because according to their terms, placing an order is a binding contract between the seller and the buyer. The time to ask the seller any questions - including about shipping rates - is before placing an order.

Now, those very same Discogs terms indicate that sellers are SUPPOSED TO list their shipping charges. So, if someone is so inclined, they could lodge a complaint with Discogs against a seller who doesn't do so. But placing an order first and then backing out is asking for trouble.

Thanks but im only sticking to Australian sellers down to the exchange rate and possible high shipping rates from the US and Europe.

    1) If you are looking for a very specific release you might want to message the seller to confirm details before ordering. Sometimes sellers list their items under the wrong section (on purpose or by accident)

    2) Some sellers include their shipping rates automatically some don't. Check the seller terms before ordering. If no shipping rates are listed email them to ask what the shipping might be. Once you hit order, an order is placed and then it all turns into a pain in the backside when the shipping charges are too high and you want out. Otherwise, just place your order and the shipping will automatically be added.

    3) You can add as many items as you want into your cart before ordering but there is one cart per seller. When you go to your cart page you'll see them all listed.

Noticed that some include the shipping already. Odds are i'll just message a seller before placing an order with them to ask about how much they charge for shipping.

Also noticed this last night whilst I was browsing.

With the new sales tax rules do non-professional Australian based sellers need charge sales tax as well?

Be careful and do check . Recently I've encountered a former very reputable seller that has this + no extra shipping under the price, as opposed to the more common shipping link, when you are viewing his listing with other sellers listings for the same CD. When you single out his listing while viewing or add it to your cart this disappears and shipping charges are added. He denies what I'm saying but I provided, copy and paste, the text from what I see and it does show what I'm saying. We'll see if he remains reputable by his actions.

    US postage definitely very high.
    German post still very reasonable.

I see shipping cost in the Details of the individual items as input by the Seller. Some sellers don't have it, which means having to message them. Others have it set up to show and work from cart.

I have another question: is there a way to search for artist and album in the marketplace? As it is, I get a great amount of unrelated results which make selecting a copy a tremendous chore.

It turns out it was a problem on Discogs data base and the seller does remain reputable.

Do you mean here at Steve's?

I just always use the search bar usually album name to give easier defined results.
