There are a dizzying number of them. I'd like all the early hits, of course, and also like their later stuff like Schoolboys. Is there a good anthology that sounds good? Not really interested in live/outtake stuff.

    Thanks!

I like the Singles Collection for the 194-1970 material.

The original Kinks Greatest Hits! plus Kinks Kronikles would be hard to beat. If memory serves, they don't overlap.

+1 on those compilations. Kronikles throws in a few oddities, but is a great history of the band's earlier years. You could add Come Dancing to cover the Arista years.

  5. That's a good one, covering the Pye era. Three other options worth considering (depending on how many discs of Kinks material is enough for you):

The Ultimate Collection: Similar to The Ultimate Collection, but with an extra disc there is room for the band's post 1971 hits as well as some songs from the Pye era that were only hits in certain countries (Dandy, Mr. Pleasant, Shangri-la)

Kinks Kolleted: Complete History 1964-1994: A very fine career spanning 3 disc set covering all eras of the band's career very nicely, sadly out of print now

Picture Book: As a 6 disc set probably to much for the beginning listener, but it does a decent job in collecting all of the hit singles, fan favourites, essential b-sides as well as some rarities.

    Good recs here...
Kinks Anthology 64-71 covers Pye period.
    But my standard rec. is
Get all the Kinks Deluxe cds.
They are as vital as getting all the classic Beatles, Stones, Who albums...

As I don't have Kronikles (I know, I know), I would go for...

    Ultimate Collection
    Anthology

Or instead of the latter, just get all the deluxe edition CD's.

After you get one of these collections, go the distance with the mono LP collection, IMO the greatest of all vinyl reissue series.

Get Kinks: The Ultimate Collection. All the hits are on CD1 and most of the deep cuts (or songs most people think were the hits) are on the second disc

Kinks Kronikles is one o.f my favorite records of any kind -- compilation or otherwise. It's sheer majesty.

I was raised on this album. All the hits up to the Arthur album in a total random order.

How many of those Kinks deluxe releases are there? Are they all still in print? How is the mastering?

Listen to the man. This is one of the best comps ever. Classic sequency and an out of this world selection of tracks. What a band

    It's 9:

    -Kinks
    -Kinda Kinks
    -The Kink Kontroversy
    -Face to Face
    -Something Else
    -Village Green Preservation Society
    -Arthur
-Lola vs Powerman and the Money Goround/Percy
    -Muswell Hillbillies

I'm not sure if they are still in print, but they must not be very hard to find.
The mastering is a little too loud for my tastes in some of these, but they sound good nonetheless. And they have lots of great additional material, plus mono/stereo mixes where applicable.
