So did anyone ever pick up the Bond Reissues on vinyl? No one has commented on sound yet and these have been out a while...
Arnold's score for "Die Another Day" is available in expanded 2cD format via La-La Land Records as of today (11/28): DIE ANOTHER DAY: LIMITED EDITION (2-CD SET) - David Arnold
Quartet has released another version of Casino Royale, a 50th anniversary, which was worked on by Chris Malone, who I believe is a member here. More info here Casino Royale And here News - Casino Royale 50th Anniversary Edition
In the 1980s, there were some very nice pressings of at least some of the James Bond LPs, with grey Liberty labels. I had Russia and Goldfinger. To my ears, they sounded better than the original stereo UA LPs, but I ended up unloading them when I found clean mono originals.
If you like James Bond 007 and 1960s spy films soundtracks, Spy Bop Royale is worth a visit. SPY BOP ROYALE . Lots of good info listed. Also, there’s a ton of great information in this thread. I’ve essentially built my Bond soundtrack collection. I have all the remastered CDs as well as the mono & stereo original LPs. Just need to upgrade my stereo Goldfinger, Casino Royale, and YOLT LPs. I’ve also picked up some of the original CD releases when I find them in the used bins and I’ve added the Never Say Never Again CD. I love the Bond soundtracks as they’re not just great music (well most are), but the cover art is fantastic. I’m enjoying collecting the other “spies” now as well. Spy on.
Greetings James Bond soundtrack experts. Is there a POV as to which CD soundtrack of For Your Eyes Only is "best sounding" ? from Discogs Bill Conti - For Your Eyes Only (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Is there opinion/consensus if the 2000 vs 2003 release is same/different/better? Any guidance greatly appreciated. Thanks --jay
Good question. Unfortunately, I can’t help as I do not have the 2000 Rykodisc, but own the 2003 EMI/Capitol, which I like.
Can confirm that the 2003 is essentially a repress of the 2000 Ryko, both of which are mastered by Toby Mountain. Of all the 2003 007 reissues, "Octopussy" and "For Your Eyes Only" don't follow suite with the others and are essentially repackaged Rykodisc versions, sans the fact that the 2003 "Octopussy" doesn't have the dialogue tracks of its Rykodisc counterpart.

I preordered the TWINE set ASAP. LLL had mentioned there might be more and I had been hoping for TWINE. Let's hope this continues for the original series. To date this is the only chance for reissues that has been on the horizon due to the closing of doors by Capitol/EON after the 2003 series, which itself was very limiting in what Lukas Kendall was able to do. (IIRC he was given a tiny budget and very, very little time and had to stick to the original LP tracklistings which is why only certain titles got expanded.) I finally ordered the new CR '67 reissue and can't wait to hear it. I have a mix of '03 issues and Rykos for those that were ports. They do seem thankfully identical save for removing the dialogue from Octopussy. The only downside to them is that they aren't always 100% complete and sometimes they have crossfades instead of stops. The 2003 reissues are solid across the board with a few exceptions. I have heard or own all of them save for Dr. No, FYEO and Goldeneye. I had always heard the Goldeneye reissue was inferior to the 1995 original and the original is cheap and sounds great so I just stuck with that one. There is a tiny bit of high end distortion in a place or two on the 2003 Goldfinger and a tiny blip on my copy of the 2003 Golden Gun during the opening of the track "Let's Go Get 'im". But the biggest offender is the 2003 AVTAK reissue which sounds AWFUL. Just full of noise and hiss, crappy top end and an awful rendition of the score that sounds more like a bad cassette than a CD. I've heard samples of Japanese CDs which sound fine and best overall is still the Wally mastered US LP in my opinion. I have no idea what in the world happened but the '03 reissue disc is godawful. (And for the film sound mix, it's only properly heard on Laserdisc which has a healthy low end gone from later releases.) There seem to be at least three AVTAK Japanese CD releases. (1986, 1991, 1998) Is one better than the others? Has anyone tried the hires downloadable albums? It appears some of the classic scores are now out in hires in their original album presentations which leads me to suspect it is perhaps from the source of the new Capitol vinyl issues that have appeared in the past two or three years. In terms of new pickups for me personally, the original UA stereo US LP for Dr. No is surprisingly good despite being from a mono source. Later issues were mono only so it's uncommon to find the stereo in clean shape. I also obtained minty original US copies of OHMSS and DAF which both sound incredible, but I always forget just how abrupt the edits are on the original LP of the latter.
This fits. I have several late 70's sunset label UA reissues which sound great and arguably better than original 60's issues. Goldfinger sounds virtually identical to the 1964 stereo original and YOLT sounds almost as good as a 1967 stereo original. I had long wondered if the later Liberty label reissues were similarly good. Thanks for the vote of confidence!
It’s been a while since I compared them so I need to take another look since I’ve made some equipment upgrades.
I've been gushing about the Casino Royale release in the other thread. It is THAT good. Chris Malone and the team on this new release have produced what is arguably the best so far. The stereo program is amazingly close to the sound of a Colgems original and the mono film cues sound incredible. The dynamic range is huge and the whole album sounds and feels just right. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Get one ASAP. I'll post DR scores when I get home. My TWINE came in as well and the wealth of extras is incredible. The sound seems improved so far even though DR ratings appear the same for the tracks on the original CD release. Overall both discs have an average of DR10. I plan to do more dedicated listening over the holidays. Most surprising so far is the amazing quality of the CR 50th and the extras/unreleased stuff on the TWINE set. I didn't even know Arnold had recorded Only Myself to Blame (totally different sounding minus the crooning vocal style)-or that his TWINE demo had a vocal!!
I have all of the US lp issues up to and including Octopussy. I also have both mono and stereo where they exist(up through YOLT). They all sound great, but some seem beter than others for the mono/stereo. Dr No, Goldfinger, and YOLT sound better in stereo. From Russia... and especially Thunderball sound better in mono. In fact the Thinderball mono and the Goldfinger stereo are demo discs for company. This being said any that you find NM shoud sound good.
When I started this thread way back in 2012 I was only collecting the soundtrack albums. Now that I've completed my Bond album collection I've decided to turn my attention to the singles and hopefully learn from the many experts here on SHF. I plan to add all the singles for all the Bond films to my collection, and already have a few, but need several others. However, I would like to know if the singles are the same as the album versions or different performances / mixes. For example, I know Shirley Bassey's 'Goldfinger' single is a different vocal take from the mono LP and Nancy Sinatra's 'You Only Live Twice' is different from the album. What about Matt Monro's 'From Russia with Love'? (@RMoore?), Tom Jones 'Thunderball', etc. Thanks!
I can't comment on the individual soundtrack albums. This album - "James Bond Greatest Hits" was a very enjoyable compilation when it came out in 1982. A1 - John Barry - The James Bond Theme A2 - Matt Monro - From Russia With Love A3 - Shirley Bassey - Goldfinger A4 - Tom Jones - Thunderball A5 - Nancy Sinatra - You Only Live Twice A6 - Louis Armstrong - We Have All The Time In The World A7 - Shirley Bassey - Diamonds Are Forever B1 - Paul McCartney & Wings - Live And Let Die B2 - Lulu - The Man With The Golden Gun B3 - Carly Simon - Nobody Does It Better B4 - Marvin Hamlisch - Bond '77 B5 - Shirley Bassey - Moonraker B6 - Sheena Easton - For Your Eyes Only
