I bought a used copy (cd) of the Hendrix compilation ‘Blues’ today and was listening to it in the car this afternoon. Track 1 kicks off with 'Hear My Train A'Comin' ' - an acoustic rendition. I've always loved this version. It has a Robert Johnson feel to it. I wanted to pose this question to the Hendrix aficionados of the forum - are there enough other acoustic performances from Jimi to compile an acoustic album? Maybe demos, or other one-off takes that he recorded? If he had lived, I think Jimi could (should) definitely have made an acoustic album. If possible, please provide track titles and album sources. Thanks!!

  2. probably not, not without using un-amplified electric

  3. Not even an EP!
Would make a great 12" 45 rpm single though.

Assuming Black Gold someday gets released it would probably fit the bill.

  6. It may depend on if was from the box of tapes, or if it was the single condensed form.

  8. Correcting myself:

At first, was only thinking in terms of finished studio tracks; even then could only come up w/the short film of Jimi on acoustic [awesome 12 string].

    There are the 'Apartment Tapes':
Jimi Hendrix - Jimi By Himself The Home Recordings
    Raw, yet beautiful.

    Enjoy.

I know I read that at one point Jimi had a desire to record a lot of acoustic songs. It may have been after his trip to Morocco, but I can't remember exactly. The management and record company discouraged this of course.

  10. Correction?:
This great site has the N.Y.C. 'Home' recordings as "electric":
    home

Does list other acoustic endeavors though; so well worth checking out.

  11. Those tapes are un-amplified electric.

There may be additional un-amped electric on one of the Dagger releases, also.

I've continued to claim I'm not much of a compilation fan but my acquisitions call me liar and I think I would be all over an all acoustic Hendrix. His magic was simply within his electric playing but in his song composition also.

I managed to cobble one together:

Acoustic demo - Morning Symphony Ideas)
Hear My Train A Comin - Blues
My Friend - West Coast Seattle Boy
Suddenly November Morning - West Coast Seattle Boy
Long Hot Summer Night - West Coast Seattle Boy
Our Lovely Home (a.k.a. Snowballs At my Window) - Out In The Sun (bootleg - very short)
Hound Dog - apartment jam with Jerry Goldstein* (YouTube)
Gypsy Eyes - Acoustic Jams (bootleg)
Long Hot Summer Night 1 - Acoustic Jams
Long Hot Summer Night 2 - Acoustic Jams
Acoustic Jam With Mitch - Out In The Sun (bootleg)

    * An alternate jam on this appeared on film at the 2019 Royal Albert Hall screening

I recall the moment I saw this in the movie - absolutely loved it. Very much wanted to hear more acoustic Hendrix, and frustrated that (to my knowledge until this thread) this was the only recording of him playing acoustic.

Yes im terms of Jimi playing an acoustic guitar there's only a mish-mash of home tapes as Jim detailed above. Hard to put together something coherent from that!
Unless something new comes to light (bar Black Gold).

This is probably the best you can get strictly acoustic. If you expand to unplugged electric, you can get a bunch more.

Interesting question considering that what he was most innovative in was his use of amplifier and effects. That is a good acoustic performance though.

Hagstrom Please stop calling them vinyls.

I wonder where those Black Gold tapes reside.

From what I heard and read, I don't think there's enough acoustic Hendrix material to form an album that would be of enough interest for me to buy it (I would give it a listen of course), and I have 20 Hendrix albums plus the 8 LP purple box set. I've long wished Jimi had lived long enough do do a really fine acoustic studio album- something I'm guessing would likely have happened eventually. But it didn't and I'm happy and grateful for all the good music he left behind.

Half-kidding here...but isn't "unamplified" another word for "acoustic"?

  24. But he’s not using an acoustic guitar, just his unplugged Strat, hence limited/shallow resonance.

    Not really.

Acoustic guitar has the big hollow body to project the sound in a very organic way.

What comes off the strings of an unamped electric solid lump doesn't compare.
