4 of my 6 DVD players are Panasonics. They always just looked better. Does this mean they're focusing on lower prices instead of better products now? Guess I'm going to have to change my loyalties and find another manufacturer?

From what I understand, this new trend of lower cost (cheaper quality) is being adopted by many (if not all or most) companies to compete with Apex, Sampo and other low priced competitors. As every year goes by, it seems like quality keeps sinking and sinking. Anything to save a buck I guess...

    Hi Guys,

I have the RV-80 that I purchased for $234 almost 3 years ago. It isn't
progressive scan but the picture quality is great.

It's a dark time for electronics because customers are demanding inexpensive stuff, and in a very competitive market. You have to be very careful how you market your product line I guess.

The mentality that a well built, more expensive machine is best doesn't apply to a buyers mentality unless you're talking about cars and trucks, but even that's changing in the same direction.

The top of the line player will be this $149 DVD-F85 (the only other full-sized stand-alone player shown at CES), which is essentially a 5-disc changer version of the DVD-S55.

    Wow, what a downgrade!

Glad I finally made a decision and sprung for one! And I am glad I chose Panasonic! :) Good picture quality and DVD-A sound quality, too!

Dave, they are still on some dealers shelves - in Toronto, at least. They go for around $400.00.

And don't forget there are players like the Pioneer Elite 45A.

    Good Picture Quality is inexpensive

I've always enjoyed buying well made products.

That being said, unlike audio gear...... great DVD picture quality is easy to attain at a very low price point.

I owned a Sony 9000ES DVD Player and a Pioneer Elite 37A. I also auditioned for 30 days the Camelot Roundtable DVD player at $3,500 and a Meridian DVD player at $4,500.

In the end, I personally prefer the picture quality from my 3 year old -RV-80 Panasonic at $499 MSRP with a street price of $230.

    That's just my tastes.

My wallet's feeling a little blue after a full year of CD shopping, so unless they're still around in a few months (insert previous post here).

I'm sure there will still be some around. People are still scoring those hard to find Sony 775 SACD players. When you're ready, let us know and we'll keep our eyes open...

  14. Last year I bought a RP-82 from Crutchfield as an open box unit. I think I paid a little over $200 for it. The nice thing about the RP-82, and all newer Panasonic DVD players, is that they don't have the chroma bug.

    Hi Johnny!

Does the the RP-82 have DVD-A with Bass Management

  16. I have not set mine up for DVD-A yet . I'll take a look at it tonight and let you know tomorrow regarding bass management.

I think it does have BM for DVD-A.

    Todd

  18. Yes, it does have bass management and it also lets you set delay on the speakers, but I think the front left and right speakers are always set to large. I'm not sure about this, I'll have to check it out tonight.

I think you can set the L&R to small. I have it set that way for playing movies, etc.

  20. I wonder, does the bass management on the Panasonic only affect DVD-A analog inputs, or does it also affect the DVD-V digital input? I hope it only affects the analog inputs because I would rather use my Aragon processor for setting up the bass management on DVD-V. I'll have to read the manual tonight, unfortunatly it is not well written. I'll also reread the manual for my Sony SACD player, I know that it has bass management for the analog inputs.

Looks like this could be a great upgrade from my RV-80.

    Hi Todd,

Thanks. I 've heard that the RP91 is also a very good player.
