The main difference between the RP-82 and the RP-91 is the latter can do proper scaling and also the price. Also, the RP-82 is supposed to have better picture quality due to the mpeg decoder...

    THanks Jet,

    I'll check it out.

    Hi Todd,

I beleive that it is the de-interlacing chip that is different not the Mpeg Decoder. The RP91 uses a Genesis Chip for progressive scan and the RP-82
uses another mfg. that does a better job with video vs film.:)

Ya, I goofed. The RP82 has the Faroudja 2200 deinterlace chip...

As for scaling, the RP82 comes with a little tackle knife to deal with all the fish we catch and we can prep them for cooking. :) Nah, the RP91 can scale the picture in progressive mode. For example, if your watching a letterbox DVD that's not anamorphic, you can fill the screen of a 16x9 TV. With the RP82 you can't do this (you have to use the TV)...

I wonder if the drop in DVD player prices means that Panasonic is
    pulling the plug on DVD-A

  8. Gary,

Last night I checked my RP-82 for bass management. It does bass management and level control on all the speakers for DVD-A. It also does time delay for DVD-V.

    Thanks Johnny,

That's another difference between the RP-91 and RP-82. The RP-91 does
    not have bass management.

How is the DVD-A sound quality?

I have been VERY HAPPY with my RP-82!
    Great Picture...Great DVD-A!
Great remaster function for "upsampling" Redbook CDs!
Too bad they don't make it anymore...

  11. I think it sounds really good when playing DVD-A discs, but I have nothing to comapre it to. I will say that Fagan's "The Nightfly" on DVD-A is incredible!!!! I was amazed how different sounding the DVD-A is when compared to the DD 5.1 surround. The DD5.1 sounds strange, especially the intro to I.G.Y.

The Nightfly sounded good as a regular CD too.

    Hi, Gary:

I just wanted to mention that the loooong awaited Philips DVD 963A is now available and for less $$$ than onecall's price on the Panny RP 91. The specs certainly indicate state of the art video playback (DCDI) plus SACD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 and all that good stuff. Being a Philips, DVD-A is not available. Early reports indicate excellent audio and video performance.

Description and specs are at http://www.consumer.philips.com/glo...DVD&subCatId=DVDPLAYER&productId=DVD963SA_001

Best price that I'm aware of is at J&R (jandr.com) which is $385.00, plus shipping. They are factory authorized dealers and includes their 30 day return/refund policy on online purchases.

    Regards,

    Jet

    Hi Jet,

THe DCDI chip is definitely superior to the Genensis Chip used in the RP-91.
If the MPEG Decoder is equal too than Phillips might have a real winner.
The early reviews have been very good.

    Thanks for the link!
