Just MY opinion: the best loudspeaker design: WILSON AUDIO

The best quality what I've ever seen from any american loudspeaker manufacturer.

I also like the classics like MARTIN LOGAN

    Can I beg to differ?

While I understand how anyone could love the sound coming out of McIntosh equipment, I find the look positively ugly beyond belief.

As a vote for agreement, I do have to agree that the Hovland pre-amp is gorgeous.

There used to be a big McIntosh dealer in town, and I always admired that elegant look of black and blue. Still do.

    Claus - a couple of questions :)

    - Which Wilson speaker do you think looks the best ?
    - On the Immedia link - what is the model of turntable that is initially pictured ?

    All the best - Andrew

Fi gear is so minimalist it's beautiful. I hear they sound amazing too.

On the other end of things, have you seen this new Vac gear?

    Sorry for the late reply...

I like the classic Wilson Audio design... and that's Wilson's Watt/Puppy.

The turntable is from Brinkmann a german designer.

I love the look of those old BSR Monarch record changers, the ones found all over the U.K. in 1950's and '60's Dansettes, etc.

Is it just nostalgia? I dunno.

    Jukeboxes too, of course.

And teal. Those illuminated faceplates are really something, especially when the lights are low and you wouldn't even be able to see the other brands.

Yeah, I meant teal (not too good with colors). Does the MX110 have a like colored meter?

Yes, the MX110 pre-amp has a blue FM tuning "meter" but it's not what I'd call a "meter" at all.

And glorious sound and some lights....

Funny you should mention the MX110. I may be able to get another one fairly cheap. What I'll do with it, I don't know - but I'll think of something!

Or I'll just pass on it.

    "sigh" Life is tough.

    Gary,
How many lineouts does it have, and is there a tape loop? What is it's tube complement?

    Lets see now.

    One tape loop.
    One aux.
Two FM (one is MPX or multi plex)
    Two phono.
One tape head (to be used for reel to reel - direct connect to the tape head or something like that - I am going to have it converted to another aux.)

Two line out to amp so you can run 2 amps.

Note: there is no AM tuner, only FM. Both phono and the aux have a hidden 'gain' control in the sides.

Five million tubes. Well, really, there are quite a few, various types. Most are supposedly for the FM tuner. I have no reason to doubt it!

You want me to list them?

Oh - high and low filters, right and left (yes, for each side!) bass and treble, some other stuff.... "loudness", I think....

There are some 12AX7's - I have installed telefunken 12AX7's!

I'm sorry if I offend any Mac lovers but I don't find that they have an "elegant look". They have a traditional look, somewhat busy and cluttered. They do have a consistent set of visual cues that reinforces the brand, but I think it's time to discard some of these features and come up with a new, modern and elegant design.

Definitely not my cup of tea.

    Regards,
    Geoff

    Thanks Gary

    Mine, too, SK.

And Metralla - you might call them cluttered if you want to, but they have much more flexibility than other bare-bones brands. And the layout of all the buttons and switches are well-thought out and logical. But styling is just a matter of preference.

I couldn't figure out why anyone would buy a Ford Taurus when they first came out. Ugleeeeee.... But it sold well; a lot of people must have thought it looked OK.

    Yes, very flexable, Casino!

I forgot to mention Stereo, Reverse Stereo, Mono (R+L), Mono (L+L), Mono (R+R)....

It's the most versatile pre that I've ever seen. Wish it had three CDP inputs, though! ;)

I'll tell ya, Gary, my ol' MA6200 integrated had all those controls, and they were very handy to track down a problem elsewhere in the system. You didn't have to switch speaker leads. You could just move both channels to R or to L, or either one to either side, etc.

Though I just got some newer Mac stuff, that MA6200 is still chuggin' and has never, ever seen the inside of a repair shop. Flawless. Trying to bring myself to put it up for sale...:sigh:

Speaking of versatile Gary, my Classe' DR-6 pre-amp has all those and one thing your Mac doesn't. Balanced inputs and outputs.;) No power switch, and no filter switches though.:)

Classe is good stuff (it's a brand I considered along with Bryston). Newer Macs, by the way, do have balanced inputs. :)
