I'm sorry, this thread is so massive I can't find any info on the Beach Boys hi-res albums on HDtracks. Are any of them worth picking up? Again sorry to ask but I've been combing through this thread and can't find much.

I have Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights), Pet Sounds, Friends, 20-20, Surf's Up, Holland, and In Concert, and I highly recommend them all.

    Re: Tusk
I checked my collection, and this is what I have:
2004 Expanded Edition. This is a 2-CD set - not sure if it had a HD release. Main album DR = 12
2011 24/192. Album only. May (or may not) be part of the Warner "flat transfer" series. DR = 13
    2015 Deluxe Edition 24/96. Main album DR = 11

They all sound good to by ears, but my go-to is the 2011 24/192.

I can't find this Tusk. Maybe it will pop up somewhere?

The 24/192 S/T can still be downloaded for some reason and should be the preferred mastering.

Are you guys sure about 2011? I was able to find a 2014 192/24 (period of Warner Flat Transfer)

Tusk 192/24 is listed as 2011 in Discogs.

Shame it was reissued with a different mastering and lower resolution in 2015.

Was all of Tusk digital, though? I thought some of the studio tracks like "Sara" were really analog recordings - it was the stuff Lindsey was doing at home that was cut digital.

And of course, if you're doing after-the-fact processing - EQ, compression and whatnot - that'll still benefit from going higher-res.

PSM has some tech info on three, all dated 2015:

    "expanded" :
    96 kHz / 24-bit PCM – Rhino/Warner Bros. Studio Masters

    Disc 1, Tracks 1-20; Disc 2, Tracks 1-22; Disc 3, Tracks 1-20 – contains high-resolution digital transfers of material originating from an analogue master source Disc 3, Track 9 – 44.1 kHz / 24-bit PCM, mastered in 96 kHz / 24-bit

    "original":

    96 kHz / 24-bit PCM – Rhino/Warner Bros. Studio Masters

Tracks 1-20 – contains high-resolution digital transfers of material originating from an analogue master source

    Deluxe:

    Disc 1, Tracks 1-20; Disc 2, Tracks 1-22; Disc 3, Tracks 1-20; Disc 4, Tracks 1-12; Disc 5, Tracks 1-10 – contains high-resolution digital transfers of material originating from an analogue master source Disc 3, Track 9 – 44.1 kHz / 24-bit PCM, mastered in 96 kHz / 24-bit"

Unfortunately, all 3 versions they carry are supposedly 2015 remasters.

Tusk couldn't have been mixed digitally, and there were no multitrack digital recorders at that point - I think the 3M deck was still at least a year and a half away from being released. Lindsey's stuff sounds like it was recorded live or something direct to 2-track digital. Maybe he recorded 2 tracks, played it back and mixed that in with additional work. There was no substantial generational loss with a digital recording so it could work if you synced your performance...

The studio tracks I suppose have been recorded multitrack analog and mixed down to 2-track digital.

There's probably an article out there about the recording of Tusk but I'm too tired to look it up.

So... Only the drum tracks were recorded digitally using the Soundstream system (16b/50k). Everything else should be analog, even the stereo master as the 2015 remaster suggest.

    The first image isn't working.
Spectrograms from needledrops are flawed since vinyl playback creates upper harmonics.
Spek isn't precise enough for this sort of analysis.

I've been half wonder recently, especially for Rhino and Warner, if they just re-title the year and they are not really paying attention to the actual remastering year. Not sure if it is a copyright thing or laziness, but I think it was some The Who things for example where they renamed the year but the files were the same. None of it helpful for the likes of us of course but not sure they care about us all that much.

Sorry, from the 1979 Ken Perry cut
I don't believe they are flawed. They will still provide a frequency cut or not.

Someone posted Tusk 24/192 in 2011 seems to match Fleetwood Mac "Tusk" at HDtracks (192kHz and 96kHz - 24 bit)

 Ya got me. I tested a remaster sample but thought the EQ was too bright for my tastes. So I just stuck with the 2011. It was expensive enough.
Your points are only off on a few, slightly. Did you do any conversions or anything?

No. No idea why we got different readings. Was it the 2014 DR13 (which you mention as 2011) or the 2015 DR11?

Your 2014- the 2015 is very much a different mastering.

They didn't use Soundstream to record Tusk, did they. I thought Lindsey recorded at home with Sony's early A/D converter hooked up to a U-Matic tape deck. The other tracks I don't know as much about.
