How do Elton John CDs on Polydor compare?

I recently scored a MINT "Honky," mint in both the disc AND the artwork. It's a "true" DJM with a DJM catalog number on the spine, as is the "Rock of the Westies" bought at the same store -- early, pre-bar-code pressings. I also scored PDO West German DJM pressings, which I believe are clones of the UK DJM discs, for "Caribou" and "Don't Shoot Me." (And I think I know where you got that "Empty Sky," Anton... I almost bought it myself a couple days ago, but the main one I'm really after now is "Elton John.")

Can anyone verify that the German PDO pressings of the DJM discs, which hail from the same time period, are exactly the same? I never did have a true DJM of "Captain Fantastic," which is my only remaining EJ import that I bought in the mid-1980s... it was always the PDO. Never saw a "Captain Fantastic" with a DJM catalog number.

Well, those two in my opinion are actually his worst two from the DJM period. I haven't listened to them in their entirety in some time, so I don't know what I'd give the edge to. Only a couple great songs on each: Caribou - Ticking, Bitch is Back; Rock of the Westies - Billy Bones and the White Bird, I Feel Like a Bullet, Island Girl.

I bought my Capt Fantastic here in the UK... it's a West German Polygram copy with international catalogue number... never seen a DJM Fantastic.

Most other DJM's I have are UK Nimbus pressings execpt 17.11.70 and Here And There, which are US (never seen DJM's of those two) and Caribou which has a DJM number but is a WG pressing.

Brian, do you mean that there are "true" and "fake" DJMs? What's the difference? I mean all my DJM's have different design so now I'm completely confused. Does it mean there are different sounding DJMs out there with "true ones" sounding better? If yes, I'm heading for the funny farm!

Brian - As for Empty Sky - well I got it in a big record store in Moscow and I've seen a couple of them since. Not rare in my places. So far all my 8 DJM scores were offline and were found in different Moscow stores both new and used.

Dunno about Here and There but I have 17.11.70 DJM. So it exists! :D The same goes for Captain Fantastic. It also exists... on my shelf! :agree:

Excellent... Can you play the intro and tell me if there's a big "yahoo" from the crowd at the end of Dave Herman's bit?

I remember having various budget label vinyl reissues that started with polite applause after the intro.

I remember reading that the UK and US versions were mixed differently, but can't think where I saw it?!

No, no, no, probably not. I just mean some of the DJMs, including most of the old ones which I no longer have, actually had a DJM catalog number -- DJM CD1, DJM CD2, etc. My Rock of the Westies is DJM CD9, my Honky is DJM CD11. DJM CD4 was "Superior Sound of Elton John." All the ones I have with the DJM catalog number on the spine were pressed in England by Nimbus.

I doubt there is any difference between the West German pressings and the British Nimbus pressings -- I'm sure they were mastered from the same digital masters. But I don't know that for 100% certain.

I actually would like, for anybody who has them, to post which DJM catalog numbers correspond to which discs. I've been looking for this info on the Internet, and have only been partially successful.

So far I've got (I'm quite sure these are correct):

DJM CD2 - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
    DJM CD3 - Elton John's Greatest Hits
DJM CD4 - Superior Sound of Elton John
DJM CD5 - Madman Across the Water
DJM CD7 - Elton John's Greatest Hits Volume II
    DJM CD9 - Honky Chateau
DJM CD11 - Rock of the Westies
    DJM CD12 - Tumbleweed Connection

And another question which I got no response to on my 76-89 thread (maybe I'm more lucky this time): anyone heard post-76 remasters on Universal. Are they similair in sonic style to earlier years Rocket remasters? Are they also done by Gus? Or are they entirely different beasts? I'm asking since there are no DJMs for post 76 material and the only MCA disc that I have so far "21 at 33" sounds just OK, not great like these DJMs.

I would guess they were the same. Don't forget pressing plants were few and far between at the time, so many pressings were done around the world.
    DJM CD6 - Caribou
    DJM CD8 - Elton John
    DJM CD10 - Don't Shoot Me...
    DJM CD13 - Empty Sky

    Thanks, Nobby!

And Captain Fantastic was DJM CD1. I just dug it out, and though mine is a German PDO pressing, it is "DJM CD1" with the Polygram number (821 746-2) in parenthesis underneath the DJM number... Which I'd say is a pretty good indication that the PDOs are digital clones of the Nimbus discs, wouldn't you?

My "Captain Fantastic" has DJM CD1 on the spine, but the disc was manufactured in West Germany by Polygram.

My copy of the S/T is West German and has a Polygram number - no DJM number - what does this mean?

    See my above post.

    What does "S/T" mean?

    Origin Of Djm Caribou Cd

Can someone please help me identify where my Elton John DJM CARRIBOU compact disc was made? The country of manufacture is not indicated anywhere on the disc or inserts. Clues:

    1. It's on the "CARRERE" label.
    2. Catalogue number is CA/802/96.092
    3. Back insert has a UPC bar code.
    4. On the label side of the CD, there is a little box within which is a set of three initials SACEM, SDRM, and SGDL.

    Thank you!

    Jim W.

Jim I can't really help ya, other than to say I own a "Carrere" Tumbleweed Connection CD!

    Ca/802/96.096

It has a DJM symbol and "stereo" on the disc, back UPC and those initials. For some reason which I can't remember right now, I believe it's French in origin!

    Sacre bleau!

Thanks. I never got an MCA or Polydor of "Tumbleweed" but I like this one and its MFSL counterpart.

    Hi all,

I just did some google searches. I want a nice copy of "The Superior Sound Of Elton John" on DJM. I found a French Carrere (French DJM) copy from a German seller for $11.00 US. I just ordered it. Should have it in 3-4 weeks.

Anyone up for some specifics? There is a lot of information on the different pressings of Elton John CDs, yet much of it is "non-information" or non-specific. For example "clone of the MCA, Polydor different" doesn't really say much as to what's what. I'd like to get to the heart of the Elton John catalog through EAC levels which tell more of the story. I'll be happy to kick it off.

    Elton John S/T WG DJM 827 689-2 68.4 / 73.5 / 76.4 / 74.5 / 56.9 / 80.9 / 81.3 / 70.9 / 85.9 / 82.4

    11-17-70 US MCA MCAD-619 (silver data surface) 46.5 / 48.6 / 46.0 / 51.4 / 82.2 / 97.6
    17-11-70 German DJM 512 854-2 86.0 / 98.7 / 91.5 / 94.3 / 93.1 / 95.5

    Honky Chateau UK DJM CD 11 100 / 100 / 100 /100 / 100 / 100 / 100 / 100 / 60.7 / 100

    Don't Shoot Me WG DJM 827 690-2 80.9 / 77.7 / 82.7 / 74.9 / 79.1 / 85.0 / 92.4 / 68.6 / 84.0 / 66.9

Anyone with any information on the different pressings - MCA, DJM & Polydor - is welcome.

Excellent, thank you. It would be nice to have all the info in one place. I have two more Elton John CDs on the way - will post levels when I receive them. Anyone with some MCA or Polydor discs? Your input would be appreciated.

17/11/70 and 11/17/70 are different mixes as well, so that would explain the different EAC peaks too!
