A shield is at ground potential, so to shield a ground wire would be to wrap another ground around it.

OK, but then, wouldn't you have one ground wire inside another ground wire connected to a common ground? What is going to shield the outer ground wire? At that point, they would be both connected together and both would therefore carry the same signal?

I have a good friend who lived in Moore, OK (OKC suburb.) Moore is the home of the 50,000 watt AM KOMA, and he went through all kinds of gyrations to get the RF from KOMA out of his system. He tried some things in his system, he talked to the engineer at the station (where he once worked), no good. His home was destroyed in a tornado so he eventually moved and didn't have the problem any longer.

One way to solve a problem, the other way to put a lead box around your stereo, OUCH!

It doesn't have to be a shielding problem. Those of you who played around with electronics as a kid may remember making a radio that needed no power out of a single diode. Oxidation on a contact can actually form a semiconductor (diode) when brought into contact with another metal. See the "foxhole radio" section of this Wiki page, and reseat your cartridge and turntable connectors.

Laurie Partridge had the same problem when she got braces.
She heard the Rolling Stones in her mouth and no one believed her.

Brian, I'm sure there's a simple fix for this.
Just tell the truth - you've got braces. No one will judge you for that.

This is easily solved. You will need to re-paint the exterior of your home white to deflect the radio signals...

If this is limited to phono input only and goes away when the preamp output is another source, you might check the gain on your phone stage. I had a weird radio wave sound once with a cartridge that turned out to be a function of my having too much gain for the cartridge.

You could always buy the offending station and then shut it down.

If there's a "signal" on your ground wire then there's a fault somewhere else in the system.

There ya go, But I think Brian would be averse to a tornado hitting his house (but would leave his system untouched?)

Brian, how close are you to Sutro Tower? Probably don't even have to be close, that thing is a monster.

  13. I was just going to mention that some people have reported receiving radio signals via their metal dental work. "Voices inside my head"!

It's certainly at the end of a very long list of alternatives that should be exhausted first. :)

Yeah, I'm kinda ticked about it since I spent a good bit of time on that writeup AND uploading pics. I never saw anything that would have warranted taking the post down, so I really have no idea what happened. Perhaps someone posted something I didn't see. I'm not sure who to ask to get it back up. It's a shame because there's not a lot of info out there on these tables.

Send a PM to a gort. They will explain what happened. I agree, there was only one pushy guy, the rest of the thread was all great suggestions, troubleshooting, and a fine journal of a system undergoing changes and your great descriptions of that process.

Haven't had a chance to play any mono records. Probably won't until Friday.

"Oh, I'm just trying to get drunk so I forget to turn off my turntable, don't worry."

Had this problem once, had to make sure the TT ground wire went to where the phono stage is, preamp with internal stage, or to an external stage.

NVM I misread your entry number 66. I was thinking tables of information and you were just talking about the tables.

Ever hear why the ministry of truth nixed the post?
