Definitely not yacht rock. Jazzy rock, maybe.

I’ve always just categorized them as ‘boring’ but that’s just me.

Croz is a Steely Dan superfan (as you probably know!) played "Wooden Ships" with them (or just Fagen?) at one of their shows

No, because there's also traditional folk music, which is not written to be sold, and the music that's generally lumped together as classical music, much of which has never been recorded and exists only as scores. Everything else, including country, jazz, hip-hop and rock, is pop music.

As they sang in FM "Funked Up Muzak"

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

    I would characterize them categorically.

If you don't get that, it will come back to you.

On the other hand, the people who call them boring are that, and more.

Call me crazy but I always thought this song sounded a bit like Steely Dan too.

They wouldn't beat Pink Floyd in that sense) as there wouldn't be overly extended, dark, orchestrated themes)

Jazzy rock. Conceptually close to 10CC.

I think what really sets them apart is the subject matter of the songs in contrast to the lush, brilliant, smooth music they create.

The singer's voice does sound a bit like Fagen's, however the song is more like Steely Dan extra light ''and i'm being kind'' if there was such a thing

I’m not sure I could categorize their music, but I like it.

I really don’t consider most of their music to be rock, even though they usually use “rock” instruments. More jazz than rock, to my ears. But, they don’t fit neatly into the jazz definition either, whatever that may be.

I think Becker, or Fagen, or both have been quoted as stating that they don’t even like rock ‘n roll.

I was referring mostly to the chorus so yeah the singer, Rick Wright, is part of that. Just out of curiosity do you not know what band this is?
