Trilogies only: A New Hope - 10 Empire - 10 Return of the Jedi - 8 Phantom Menace - 5 Attack of the Clones - 6 Revenge of the Sith - 7 Force Awakens - 6 Last Jedi - 3 Rise of Skywalker - 3
Pretty close to the OP: Star Wars: 10/10 Empire: 10/10 Jedi: 9/10 Phantom Menace: 0 Attack of the Clones: 2 (one point for having Yoda fly around, and another for setting up a joke in "Superbad") Sith: Actually didn't see it. Am told it's better than the two pieces of garbage which preceded it. Awakens: 6/10 Last Jedi: This is the one where Mark Hamill shows up again? And Laura Dern captains a ship? I think I've seen it. 6/10 Rise: Haven't seen it yet. I suspect it's another middler.
10 for the first 3 No idea for the prequels. I've seen them all, but can't work out which one is the worst one of the 3. Tempted to say Phantom Menace because it has Liam Neeson in it and he is awfully bland in everything he does, but then the others also have terrible terrible stuff in them. Worth watching once I suppose, but they lay in the Blu-Ray boxset I have unplayed so far. I can't face the gurning Palpatine fight in the middle of the last film another time. The Force Awakens 9 The Last Jedi 9 (I'm in a minority here, I really liked what was done here, apart from the Harry Potter bit in the casino with the furry things. Time will be the kindest to this one, in-time it will revisit well to all the doubters) Return of Skywalker ? - need to see it again, I've seen it, but didn't really get WTF was going on all the time. The total polar opposite of the Last Jedi, which took its time to build, this one is just a rollercoaster of stuff being thrown at you, constantly, for 2 hours.
Original - Yay! Prequel - eeeewwwww! Sequel - Meh.* *I found the first sequel pretty entertaining on first watch, but haven't had much desire to re-watch. Have yet to see the newest one. Haven't seen any of the side stories.
I agree. There are three good movies within the Star Wars universe: Star Wars, Empire, and Last Jedi. And I'm not even sure about Star Wars.....
I remember watching the first prequel in the theater and realizing midway thru...this sucks. the franchise never really recovered for me, the sequels just taste like reheated hash to me.
Except the hype for the last one has died down, which is when you get the real opinions. I don’t remember The Phantom Menace itself being poorly received until people sat on it for awhile.
It's not the hype. It's just I've been on a major Star Wars kick lately and got into a heated discussion with a gal who doesn't care for Star Wars much but being raised in the 90's likes the prequels for the actors. To me it's a sacrilege but she comes from entirely different place with her perspective.
I haven't given this a lot of thought but these are my instincts out of 10 Star Wars 9 Empire Strikes Back 10 Return of the Jedi 9 The Phantom Menace 6 Attack of the Clones 5 Revenge of the Sith 7 The Force Awakens 9 The Last Jedi 9 The Rise of Skywalker 8 Rogue One 8 Solo 7
Star Wars 9 Empire 10 Return of the Jedi 7 Phantom Menace 5 Attack of the Clones 5 Revenge of the Sith 7 Force Awakens 5 Last Jedi 2 Rise of Skywalker 3 Rogue One 9 Solo 7
Star Wars - 10/10... game-changing cinematic alchemy (God bless Marcia Lucas and the editing team!); a deceptively simple little space opera that ran deeper than most art house films, that defied the odds, and changed the world; an undisputed masterpiece and unarguably one of the most important films ever made. The Empire Strikes Back - 9/10... a superb and masterful continuation of the story; maturer, deeper, darker, but it's predecessor still trumps it... just about. Return of the Jedi - 8/10... a very flawed but nonetheless worthy conclusion that gets an extra point because it's buoyed by the peerless legacy of it's two predecessors. *It's worth noting all three of the above are being rated solely in their original theatrical versions.* The Phantom Menace - 5/10 (and I'm being extremely charitable here)... like Ed Wood was handed a hundred-million dollar+ budget and cutting-edge visual effects technology... 'nuff said, moving on swiftly... Attack of the Clones - 7/10... again, being charitable but I see a pretty darn good SW film in here were it not for the rambling, overlong, and often interminable final cut; had it been edited to a much tighter, more focused final cut of less than 130 minutes, it could have easily been an 8/10, alas... when it's good, it's very, very good. Revenge of the Sith - 9/10... some of the inherent flaws of the prequel trilogy (iffy dialogue, wooden performances, overuse of CGI, etc) are still present, but the sheer dramatic and emotional weight of the story tips the balance in it's favor and outweighs it's weaker points; emotional, epic, tragic, visceral, and with an uncompromising and palpable sense of encroaching darkness and despair throughout... who thought George had it in him!? *Just a last little addendum to the prequels; I know they don't often match up in any way to what the OT said happened at the time, and Anakin is far, far too young compared to his age in said OT, but I just can't completely discount the prequels entirely, no matter how I try to... there is much good in them, and I see them for what they could have been with more or less the same story but with better writing/directing, not how they eventually and largely turned out.* Frankly, I don't rate any of the Disney SW films... expensive fan-fiction and nothing more; between a sequel trilogy with no story to tell and two entirely unnecessary prequel movies that were, in effect, answers to questions that no-one ever asked to begin with. R.I.P. STAR WARS; 1977-2005 Fondly remembered... thankfully over.
Star Wars 9 An adventure masterpiece Empire Strikes Back 10 Same as above, but even better Return of the Jedi 8 The weakest of the three originals, but still a very good film The Phantom Menace 4 A letdown. Attack of the Clones 4 A second letdown. Revenge of the Sith 3 Guess what? The Force Awakens 6 I saw this one as a new hope (no pun intended) for the Star Wars universe The Last Jedi 5 I was wrong, I'm definitely... The Rise of Skywalker 4 ...hopeless Rogue One 7 The closest to the spirit of the originals. Pretty good. Same here.
Star Wars 10 Empire Strikes Back 10 Return of the Jedi 9 Phantom Menace 4 Attack of the Clones 5 Revenge of the Sith 6 The Force Awakens 7 The Last Jedi 6 Rogue One 8 Solo 7
Nah - it was viewed pretty poorly right off the bat. People expected brilliance and felt severely let down by what they got. Kids liked it but older fans tended to be down on it...
I guess I'm weird this way, but I never had any interest in any of them. I never understood the acclaim or the fandom.
I remember liking the first 3 when I was a kid, but I haven't seen them in years. The only other one I saw was The Phantom Menace and I really didn't care for it.
Per your Attack of the Clones thoughts...it's funny how it would mirror mine on TLJ. To me, TLJ is to date the best of the Disney era movies ,but its in serious need of tightening and editing. "The Last Jedi Legendary" fan edit does just this. The existing cut is an 8...but sincerely the fan cut brings it up to an 8.5 and maybe a 9. I personally don't think AOTC could be drastically brought up to par even with a good editing. There is so much about that film that makes me cringe and nothing short of some rewrites and reshoots can fix it,but I will say that when I did my rewatch a month or so ago I found myself enjoying it much more than I had before, particularly the last hour, which is classic Star Wars in all of its cheesy goodness, So in the past I would give it a 4,I give it a solid 5. But the first hour or so...ugh. it's a wonder Ewan McGregor didn't end up with severe back problems after that movie given he was literally carrying that film up until the arena scene. I may have said it before, but George's biggest mistake with the prequels was making Anakin the main protagonist of the prequels. Obi-wan and his relationship to Anakin should have been the main focus, with the "love story" between Padme and Anakin as a subplot in the way Leia and Han's courtship was a subplot in the originals. That slight shift of point of view may have saved the prequels alone. That's why I'm excited for the Obi-wan series IF it happens. Ewan is a fantastic actor and I can't wait to see what he does with the character with (hopefully)better writing and direction.
