They just don’t make them like Bogart anymore. Back then, men were real men and dames, well they were dames. ;)

Absolutely NOT overrated. This is classic Bogart and noir at it's best.
A deeply troubling portrayal.. perhaps a tad too close to what some people believed he was like. A stand out film, and one of countless memorable roles.

It's pretty amazing that Bogart made it in movies, especially at that time. He wasn't considered to have a "star's face", had a slight speech impediment. and most of all, didn't seem like he could be the kind of guy who'd kiss rear ends.

Agreed In a Lonely Place is a great film, and a deeply troubling portrayal makes it somewhat difficult to watch. But I don't think the Steele character was like Bogart himself. Except I suppose in that he did like to hang out with people outside the business a lot from what I understand. But not the violent parts.

Great role for Gloria Graham, btw...

Oh yeah, me too! He should have won the Oscar for that one first.. Brilliant!
Sure happy John Huston got it for Best Director. Father Walter was magnificent!
Absolutely in top three easy .. I grew up on these guys, my father had me watching the big three by five years old. When I met Lauren Bacall at her first book signing in the mid 1990's, I told her I literally grew up on Bogart movies.. She looked at me closely, and said "oh, really!".

yes, the great Greer Garson presented, and it's my recollection it was her who ran into Bogart at the studio, him having a coughing fit. She insisted he go to a doctor, and that was what led to his diagnosis.

Great scene, The Big Sleep, with Dorothy Malone.

Did anyone like "Beat The Devil"? Some say it's awful, some say it's great. It was on YouTube the last time I checked a few years ago.

One of the very few that I could take or leave.. I have watched it over and over, and still feel the same. That said, there is always things to watch for when Bogie and the great, great Peter Lorre are together.

I would say it's different, but most of them are different one way or another. It's a comedy with an ensemble cast. I enjoyed it, but it's not in my top ten, either.

That's the thing... Bogie, Cagney, and Eddie G. could lay a rap down before you know what hit you. They were the kings of giving out the fast, snappy orders.. If you've seen some of the bloopers, it's really hilarious..
