Indeed.. while he was not fully blacklisted, certainly grey listed. He was an extremely giving, philanthropic guy.. giving to almost anyone who asked. He gave to a hundred charities, and it turned out 11 as I recall had ties to the commies. And.. he did not like naming names. He went through a very slow spell, but actually continued to work sparingly throughout that plague. Edward G. was cleared of any communist ties. He testified in Washington.. This.. to a man who was an outspoken activist against fascism and the nazis.
Bogart and Huston are joined at the hip, Falcon, Queen, Largo, Sierra Madre, and yet not much mention of Beat the Devil. A film with some truly funny scenes and one that is in dire need of a remaster.

Yeah.. that's right, it's truly a fine film. Actually, another breakthrough for Bogie's career. With a script co-written by the great John Huston. This must have been the first time (1940) when Bogart and Huston hooked up. Thank you Lord. .. In the celluloid world- a match made in heaven. They were very close friends on so many levels. The film was released in Jan, 1941. Here's a few minutes of the colorized version.. b & w is better, but kind of neat once. Humphrey Bogart was about to make a film that would catapult him out of the stratosphere. With a first time freshman director..
Twilight Time releases are generally good, though I feel like there's something a bit off with their release of The Barefoot Contessa. It's almost like there are 3 layers: one for Red, Green and Blue, but they don't exactly match up all the time. I'm sure that's not the real problem but that's how I'd describe it. Does anyone know if the Masters Of Cinema version looks the same? I found it a little distracting and I think it could be done better.
WHERE THE HELL ARE THE BOGART FANS ? ? wtf This is why there are not Bogie films on the big screen.. You haven't seen Bogie till he's on the silver screen W I D E brothers and sisters in Boge!
Your instincts are right. The film was made using Technicolor’s three-strip colour process*, and something has gone slightly wrong with the print used, which exhibits a strong red bias and fringing effects (those odd green halos you sometimes see around the characters). Unfortunately, MoC only had access to the same master as TT, so their disc looks similarly poor. This isn’t something that could have been fixed by superior digital encoding; it’s baked into the master. * Technicolor - Wikipedia
In other news, I picked up the HMV Premium Collection BDs of To Have and Have Not and Key Largo yesterday. I’m off today, so will likely give them a spin this morning.
It looks like the MoC version also comes with a DVD. Is that also in a wide aspect ratio like the Blu-ray? I ask because there's a 4:3 US DVD. If that's a different master it might not exhibit the same color problems. Normally I'd shy away from a 4:3 version of a film, but since this movie came during a period of transition, it might have been framed to look pretty good in multiple formats.
