I hated John Wick 3 so does that mean I'm out of luck for action movies now?

I think the Rotten Tomatos score is a function of being a sequel. Very few viewers going to see it who aren't already fans of the first two.

The first movie would be compared to all the action movies a viewer or reviewer has seen. The third to how it advances the series and tweaks the established formula.

I didn't mention the Raid movies which are excellent because the OP appears to be looking for something more story based, the Raid(s) are full on non-stop adrenaline rush movies.

SICARIO is the best film I've seen mentioned in this thread. It's genuinely gripping and you're never sure what's happening next. The sequel squeezes the same fruit but isn't as good.

While I understand exhaustion with the superhero movie, the "Trained Assassin" trope is even more overplayed. I feel like every Hollywood A-lister is required to do one at sone point.

I stopped watching halfway through JW2-violence just for the sake of violence. I'm not anti-violence in movies, but there has to a reason.
    JW1 was okay.
I have no plans to watch JW3.

There are better action movies out there.

    See below.

    Couldn't have said it better.

JW3 was just like a redux of The Matrix Reloaded, the violence goes on and on and on, like the Energizer Bunny. Instead of a fight scene taking five minutes, it goes on for twenty five minutes.

I sat there thinking that there would be some sort if improvement, interesting dialog perhaps? But it never happens. It is boring and repetitive to watch. Just like a movie with endless car chases or special effects.

When I want to watch things being destroyed, I will go to a Godzilla movie. Godzilla doesn't really have a speaking part, but then I don't expect him to.

At least Godzilla in recent movies is trying to save the world.

Assassin/Secret Agent/supercop-type movies are just comicbook movies minus the capes! Even yr standard blockbuster big-monster flix are pretty much comicbook movies also, especially when they feature a single hero saving the day. For me, quasi-realistic cop or war flix like Den Of Thieves or Black Hawk Down are infinitely more watchable and satisfying. And of course there are more 'exceptions', but Hollywood's a comic book town!;)

I thought the original film is one of the most overrated ever. Looking at the RT score of the third installment, maybe I was wrong.

I liked it. Was in the mood for a big screen kick ass movie. It didn't disappoint.

Her character is sort of the stand-in for the audience, though. She and the audience are dropped headfirst into this undeclared war and we're trying to figure it out with her.

I can’t imagine it being lazy and sloppy the first two were very well put together and I’m highly impressed with Keanu’s fight scenes - the guy is over 50 I believe. The fight scenes easily could have looked like the scenes from Bowfinger.

I really like Keanu and I also have a grey with black stripes Mustang so I’m biased.
