Not surprised to see Cashman and West on there. The record is still pretty cheap on Discogs. It could be a "Pink Moon" kind of thing for this guy.

    Does ottertracks know yet?

Good point. The charts in 1974/1975 had a large country, country-rock and folk-tinged presence ---including many Top Ten singles.
It was all played side by side with disco and Elton John on AM.....

Because of the mid west connection I thought it was Heartsfield and I listened to their album tracks on YT and no luck and so then I thought it was a non LP single by them. I also looked at country/folk rock duos similar to Batdorf and Rodney and Cashman West turned up on one of my searches and now that I hear the actual track their influence does show up a bit.

Well Cashman and West apparently produced this track, so that totally makes sense.

    Wow, great work!

I actually have a copy of Dawson's earlier album Songman. And something deep in my memory says that he played at least one gig in Athens when I was a student at Ohio University a bit earlier.

Everyone says that a question is easy when you know the answer! Thanks for being the one SteelyNJ! I'd never heard of Jim Dawson until today and I had visions of spending most of this new year trying to find out what "I keep looking for that sunset" could possibly be. You have saved me a lot of time! And in the end, the mystery was solved super-fast on this Forum. Brilliant! Let's hope someone decides to reissue this and Dawson's other 2 albums now.

Here's another group in a somewhat similar vein. Free Beer and as almost unheard these days. I just heard them and the track when listening to an old air check from 1975 and I easily found a video on YT:

Unbelievable that this was major-label and not some local group. The artist and album are listed in the old 1979 Rolling Stone record guide with the red cover and everything. In the whole Internet scheme of things this was essentially right under our noses.

The lyrics for this song were on Genius, too. Typing in the actual lyrics on Google never pulled up any results, but the page showed up as soon as I typed “Jim Dawson lyrics.”

Cool, I can see the name of the guitar player I was sure that was gonna be key to figuring this out. Bob Mann, can't say that I've heard of him, but his Discogs resume is pretty long so I've most likely heard him before.
