Salo - 120 Days of Sodom (Criterion) - The most god-awful thing I've ever seen (well, next to documentary footage of WWII atrocities). It will sicken your soul. I'm mad at myself for ever buying it (I read all the warnings before buying, but thought they were surely exaggerated, so did not heed them...big mistake). Won't even display it on my movie shelf - cast away in a storage box.

this film (the grey) seriously surprised me .... it looked like something that was going to be a derivative adventure film ... it ended up being far more important and impacting than that ....

it is actually one of my favourite films .... i watch it every once in a while when i need a reminder about ..... certain things.

i understand what you're saying though, as it is a heavy load of a film. great acting all around and great craftsmanship in the making of this film ..... (the same director went on to make 'all is lost', which i suppose is another film i'd add to the list here .... he also made 'margin call'

hardly any dialogue ... a very cinematic experience ... sound design by randy thom (apocalypse now etc)

I’d venture to say the most mainstream movie with the darkest ending is “Beneath the Planet of the Apes”. (But I do realize this isn’t what you’re looking for)

That film resonates very much with me, partly due to personal reasons but also because of the performances. All around.

I don’t see this film mentioned very often, but it really is a clever gem.
