I never missed a show, bought all their albums and was devastated when the show went off the air. Besides the topical comedy and killer writing, they had the best musical guests.

What reminded me of them today was a clip of Tommy doing an impression of Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. Then the set-up gag on the couch. Maybe we can post some of our favorite clips and stories. Bob Einstein has a good one about getting high while in costume from a motorcycle cop sketch, so maybe we can dig up some others.

My favorites from the show was the famous The Who appearance, and the numerous editorial segments with Pat Paulson (and when he "ran for President").

Have to post this clip too...

I was 8-10 when the originals broadcast, and for whatever reason, it was never on in our house. I've had to watch clips ever since.

Maybe we can find the one where he tells Johnny he's going to join the air force because it has a good dental plan!

Was George the only Beatle to set foot inside CBS Television City in Hollywood, California?

Obscure girl group The Cake had one masterpiece in them, a brilliant version of "Baby That's Me" arranged by the great Harold Battiste.

    The Cake-Baby That's Me.

Despite never having a hit they somehow got on the Smothers Brothers show -- presumably their managers had great contacts.

Note the unique performance style of the girl on the left (Jeannette Jacobs)

This has been my only exposure to the Smothers Brothers. I've watched this performance countless times.

Don't forget the big break they gave Glen Campbell as their summer replacement

Interesting interview with Tommy that covers some stuff usually not talked about:

I grew up playing "Think Ethnic" -- a live albums of theirs from 1963. Here's a great TV clip from that same time period:

Anybody remember The Smothers Brothers Show, *sitcom version*, in which Tommy played Dickie’s guardian angel?

I've always enjoyed the Smothers Brothers show; it seemed they were able to comment on social issues and still be respectful, funny, and entertaining. On a technical note, the original CBS show always looked good - the original 2" tapes must look fantastic based on the DVD releases. I've still got a copy of Live at The Purple Onion LP somewhere.

You probably know all about this, but maybe others don't:

No, (or No No No No) Ringo was on the show a few years later, but I wouldn't call this a favorite highlight.

I think that version aired on NBC, not CBS.

I forgot they switched networks. No wonder you phrased your question that way about Television City.

Are they doing any shows still once in a while?
