It seems like this whole project, Sullivan footage and all, got done because of Spielberg's clout...so perhaps that is still a factor in this blu-ray release.

I thought I read somewhere (years ago) that they just took the plunge and used the music, and they didn't have access to the master tapes, so just did needledrops off of mint condition records. Also, they got the footage from Sullivan archives, but avoided showing the actual faces of the Beatles to avoid lawsuits.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong and I don't recall where I read this, but it seems like it was an interview someone did with Zemekis.

now we're getting a BD finally and no worries of what we will not have! all done...I cannot wait for this...Is this friggin' cool or what? Now we need The Birth Of The Beatles TV Movie! The European version which is uncut! I wish I could find a decent copy...everything out there is piss poor!

I seem to recall this, but my recollection is that they were sent tapes of the Beatles songs, but decided they didn’t sound right, and wanted the original Capitol duophonic stuff...I could be wrong.

You'd think for all the money Criterion wants for their releases they could spend a little bit more on making the packaging actually appealing, wouldn't you? Only dedicated fans of the movie itself will want to buy it with the cover it's going to have.

Agreed. This artwork is just horrible. I’m hoping it’s on a slipcover I can just toss... I suppose they wanted to use artwork that’s different from the movie poster and original DVD release to set it apart. But what they came up with is absurdly bad. They at least should have used the film’s title logo in that distinctive “glowing” font.

If you have the DVD of this movie be sure to listen to the running comments by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale. Very interesting stories about shooting the film on a limited budget. I don't think they cared too much for Murray The "K" who played himself in the movie. The funniest stories had to do with the person who played the barber (the eye patch is real).

Just watched the Criterion blu-ray and the film is still as funny as I remembered it. Excellent picture, great audio and nice bonus features!
