It’s fascinating to see Waits’ evolution as an artist and how he has ploughed his own furrow regardless of fans or critics. It’s this diversity in his music that has resulted in such a wide range of opinion whenever we discuss how his work should be ranked.
Heart Attack and Vine for me was the tipping point stylistically and it started to get much edgier from that point. I love Small Change, Rain Dogs and Swordfish but funnily enough, at this stage of my life, I find Blue Valentine spends more time on my turntable than even those favourites. It’s a very underrated album and would be a great place to kickoff what will be an roller coaster journey for you.

    Godspeed and go safely.

  2. The following albums in this order give a good indication of his development as an artist. Start at the beginning, things get a little weirder and more complicated with each album so decide for yourself how far out you want to go.

    Closing Time
    Small Change
    Heartattack and Vine
    Swordfishtrombones
    Bone Machine
    Mule Variations
    Bad As Me

The Acting Years. A nice little video essay about Tom's movie appearances.
