I ordered the Illinois Speed Press reissues from a company out of Los Angeles called Futuredge. The owner has told me several times he will send out my copy, but they never seem to arrive. Has anyone else out there gotten their Speed Press reissue? Neil
A friend of mine sent me the message shown below that was taken from Paul Cotton's website. Unfortunately, the information doesn't sound too promising to me. Luckily, a friend of mine has a copy of the original reel to reel tape at 71/2 IPS that he will hopefully transfer to CDR. I think I'll be listening to the CDR instead of this reissue. "Some of you have asked whether the original master tapes were used in the production of the CD's. Well...the condition of the masters were not conducive to clean-up. Also, "masters" used in 1969 and 1970 are nothing like those used today. This was analogue half inch tape with stereo tracks. So Futuredge used a combo of sources including half speed master records (such as those sold by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs). The music (other than the bonus tracks) was fully digitized and then re-mastered and re-equalized to conform with rock music of today (a suggestion made by Paul). For those of you who had trouble ordering from the Futuredge site, John Thaler said that the website is now fixed and anyone who ordered will still receive the discounted price up to November 28." www.paulcotton.com Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
They are going out, very slowly, I am told. I have a review copy of it with the extra CD with the graphics and a band history and comments from some of the original members. As Paul Cotton's work goes, this stuff is fairly primitive, but it's really nice to have on CD. IMHO, he's one of the most underrated songwriters and guitarists around. Another shameless plug: if you are interested, my Sound Waves interview with Paul is posted on both his web site and on the official Poco site.
Mark, How is the sound quality of the CD? I love the first self-titled Illinois Speed Press LP, but after reading the quotes that I listed above, I was afraid that the CD would possibly suffer from the remastering technique that is also mentioned in the above quote. Thanks, Ed Hurdle HeavyDistortion
I think I'll stick with my original LP copies! I recently acquired a 1-A pressing of the Duet LP on the '360' label and it sounds great.
