It's not a case "illuminating discussions"
It's about leavening some sort of source information about a movie(tv show) that's unavailable anywhere else.the message board excelled at that. Sure the big latest blockbusters had a lot of trolls swamping the relevant message boards, but you just ignored them.Thankfuly older films were left alone.

So many good points being made in that FAQ thread which are just being ignored. This is quite frustrating.

There is no mention of deleting and 'not archiving' that I can see. At least not from Col Needham.

He's just spewing out a bunch of BS to attempt to justify what they're doing. "We care too much to keep the current boards." Seriously? What a joke.

I fear the other thing that's going to happen is they will get rid of the 'old' style interface. The one that you can elect to use only if you're logged in. Not as big a deal, but I do greatly prefer it.

I care more about the msg board posts than the user reviews.

Yeah, I still use that too. Every now and then I get to the site not logged in and always find the layout jarring.

Imo the IMDb will be sadly missed.
Just can't help thinking Col Needham has made a tragic mistake.

The convenience of having a board or section of it coupled with each individual movie is what will be greatly missed. So many times I've had a question about trivia pertaining to a certain movie, and the IMDB message board was the only place I could find the answer. I don't use it a lot, but removing that resource completely sucks.

Looks like letterboxd.com has had a big opportunity fall into its lap.

According to a statement on IMDB, the site’s message forums and the private messaging system will be disabled on February 20th, because they “are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide.”

The message boards had long been seen by Needham as an integral part of the IMDb’s appeal. He told the Guardian in 2013: “The human brain likes to make connections. Somebody spots a connection between two things ... you want to share that knowledge. And IMDb is a good platform.”

The news comes amid increasing disquiet at the influential website’s vulnerability to malign outside influence, with one recent example cited being the blizzard of negative polling for Raoul Peck’s Oscar-nominated documentary I Am Not Your Negro.

The message boards will be permanently disabled on 20 February, following a two-week transition period.

I still say big Hollywood has their hands all over this. Maybe I'm wrong.

Some people cuss and insult each other on there, so I guess they think it's not adding to the discussion. Sorry to see it go. I use it sometimes for information.

I wonder why, with so many users asking for the content to be archived, imdb wouldn't have adjusted their robots.txt to allow archive.org's wayback machine to archive the content for them. Seems like that would be the easy way out of this so they could avoid ticking off a whole lot of people.

But when you go to the wayback machine and try to bring up an imdb board post it says
Page cannot be displayed due to robots.txt.

It's because the Internet Archive isn't even bothering to archive the site.

The IMDB message boards remind me of Usenet around the time AOL started offering access to newsgroups in the mid-90's- lots of posts and replies almost all of which were either A). Not about the topic at hand, or B). Incomprehensible.

I can't believe anyone would want any of it archived anywhere. Any actual important information is already a part of IMDB itself and there are much better platforms for discussion now.
