Love the Heads, but agree with you re that longbox; those nudes inside are pretty ugly too.

I like them for what they are, but I also support them because I am not a fan of digital music or streaming.

    Yes. YES!

This post says it all. For instance, though I adore streaming and dig today's technology, I love collecting CDs (and vinyl).

And that's the heart of the matter.

As far as box sets go, my favorites were the super-comps of the 90s. Allmans Dreams or either of the two Byrds boxes. Clapton's Crossroads, CSN, stuff like that. The type with four or five discs spanning a large period of the artist's career.

I prefer them to a huge box focussing on one album.

I've gotten rid of most of my CDs but kept all the box sets, including:

    King Crimson: great deciever
    Eno: Vocal and Instrumental boxes
Cocteau Twins: singles and eps box
    Genesis: Archive Vol. 1
    Kate Bush: This Woman's Work
Velvet Underground: Peel Slowly and See
    the Cure: Join the Dots
    Joy Division: Heart and Soul
    Beatles: Stereo and Mono boxes
All of Steven Wilson's book-deluxe versions of his solo albums with CDs and Dvd/blue rays

It's about the packaging with most of these since I have them ripped or listen to digital versions most of the time. But I wouldn't get rid of any of these.

I treasure my big pile of boxes - some I love more than others, but they have provided and will continue to provide a lifetime’s worth of listening enjoyment for me.

One short-lived trend trend that I did find annoying (sometimes) were novelty shapes for the boxes - perfect examples of this were the old-time radio-shaped box for Hank Williams’ Mother’s Best Complete set, and the piano-shaped box for Jelly Roll Morton’s Library Of Congress recordings. Both were kinda gratuitous, and made storage tricky. Just gimme a Mosaic or Bear Family-style presentation & I’m good.

Although I loved the 45 carrying case done for Rhino’s Beg, Scream & Shout...

I moved not too long ago and dutifully stacked up all my CD box sets in a closet. Then realized I hadn't played most of them in ages. A waste. So I set about playing all of them on my kitchen CD player. Every disc of every box set I own (defined as over 3 discs). Took almost six months, but what a pleasure to rediscover all that music. (In some cases, I'd only played the set once or twice upon acquiring it.) Highly recommended "project."

I've never been a fan of individual CDs, but a good box set will keep me happy for ages. Just in the last few years, Family at the BBC, Dylan's Bootleg Series, the Roxy Music deluxe, the wealth of great bonus material in the Ian Hunter and Steve Hillage sets, the Pretty Things box, Pink Floyd's Early Years... and no, it's not just the music. The everything else that some people complain about, I love it!

Collecting coins is not the same as investing in precious metals. It's true that the value of the metal can impact on prices, but there are other factors such as rarity and demand. Some silver dollars are extremely rare, for example, and are worth 1000s of times the value of the metal content.

The Smithsonian has three of 'em, along with double eagles from 1849 and 1933, which make numismatists drool like Homer Simpson in a donut shop.

Steering back on topic, my first box set was 20 Years of Jethro Tull, hailed at the time as an example of how to do it right. Little did we know how much more was lurking in the vaults for Steven Wilson to discover. Regarding other artists' box sets, I don't particularly enjoy the weird extras like patches and replicas of artifacts, but I read the booklets.

You are correct, but I didn’t mean to compare the two in terms of them having equal resale return or value.

I was just illustrating the bigger point - that valuing physical items is indeed something that shouldn’t be surprising or out-dated to someone who may simply prefer “collecting” the non-physical. Since collecting physical items of countless other things, that are considered hobbies, happens everyday without anyone thinking it is remotely unusual or out-dated.

I also could have replaced coins, I suppose, with wanting to collect actual stamps, rather than just images of the stamps. Or collect sports cars rather than build a collection of “images of sports cars”. Etc, etc, etc. :)

My apologies. I didn’t mean to go off track. I thought I was just echoing/repeating your initial post (which I liked by the way), in agreeing why it is so much more rewarding to collect those CD sets! Or any physical items versus non-physical, if given the choice. :)

I think the Motown Hitsville Box Set Design of the Original Building is kind of a Nice Design to capture the spirit of the Music from Motown but YMMV.

Digital downloads are boring. And you can still get all the benefits of DDs by simply ripping your CDs. My most valuable item is the Roxy Music Complete Studio Collection box set and it's beautiful.

DDs included with physical items of course are more or less an exception, because you're still getting an item you can hold in your hand and physically "own".

One thing I like a lot, also, is coming across foreign various artists compilations at a dollar store type of shop. Recently I found an Australian one and a Belgian one. The CD format is really cool for that, double CD, 20 tracks or more each - it's like 4 LPs.
I loved these British double CD sets from the 90s full of indie pop/rock, or the Volume series. Not box sets per se...but lots of music in there.
The compilations from magazines have also been quite cool.

It's nice to have stuff but you need the space to store and display them. I live in a small house that's been dominated by books and cds. There comes a point where it's just all too much and it can be hard to reverse the situation, I had to clear my front room for redecoration, it's been a final chance to start again it feels so much less oppressive now.

I'm pretty much all digital for new purchases now and looking to off load at least half of what I have, that'll still be more than most people.

I live in the smallest studio apartment you could imagine, and I have a lot of stuff everywhere. It's not easy, but it's the way I want it (even if it is oppressive to an extent...).

Lol, I see someone couldn't resist posting their entire collection of box sets. Figured that would happen.
I'm not going to list all my box sets, but here's some I've recently gotten in the last few months (or ordered and still coming):

King Crimson--Heaven and Earth Box ($140) 24 discs inc 4 blu ray

    Bob Dylan--Rolling Thunder Box ($60) (14 cds)

    Dylan--1966 Live Tour Box ($90)
    36 cds

    Dylan Mono Recordings--$72 (8 cds)

Beatles US Albums box ($114)13 cds

Allan Holdsworth albums box--$112 (12 cd)

Todd Rundgren+Utopia--Road to Utopia albums box-($60)
    7 cds

    add
    Procol Harum Anthology Box

Can U Dig It--Sounds of 70s Soul (excellent cond used, been wanting this for a long time, it's oop).

Some of those I've been putting off buying for quite awhile, and have been waiting to get them at reasonable prices.

I'll probably get the Woodstock 10 CD set soon, couldn't justify the limited 38 disc complete set at $900 with shipping. And that extra $800 or so I didn't spend made it easier to justify buying the above sets, which is a LOT more music (about 250 discs of music including some DVDs and BR).

    Long live physical media!
