One of the factors, Force Awakens was such a huge dissapontment to die-hards but a hit with film critics and so-so fans.

Don't mind an aging Ford playing Jones again but hopefully not the dork, what his name, that starred in a movie that had a talking space raccoon, a tree and all sorts of crap.

Just mentioned this to one to one of my co-workers, who rightfully pointed out that Indiana Jones can't die, because he drank from the "cup" -giving himself eternal life- at the end of The Last Crusade...

Yes eternal life came with a price: to guard the Grail within the circle both he failed to do.

So in other words, he chose...badly:D

Well, that's good then- my original statement about killing off Indy in the fifth movie can still stand!

Lucas needs to be involved, but his role should be basic story idea. The actual Crystal Skull artifact was a fine concept for the Indy franchise, and I assume it was Lucas' idea. Let him pick the new relic and setting for the last film. It will also be the Soviets as villains again (they were in power for a long time), and I assume that was also a Lucas decision.

Is that the driest of humor or do you really mean to suggest that The Force Awakens was a disappointment to someone? I'm the Star Wars generation (the authoritative generation in these matters) and the film was a resounding success in my view and the view of the peers I know. It was everything a Star Wars film should be. So-so fans, this generation is not - we made Star Wars a hit.

I could see it being a disappointment to people who loved the prequels... Newcomers who had no sense of what Star Wars was, who accepted the prequels without judgement. If those are the "die-hards", they had their Highlander 2, bless them if they enjoyed it.

But Star Wars is back on track with those who knew it when it started, knew it when it went off the rails, and know it now.

I was under the impression that the Grail's effects wore off after a certain length of time so you'd have to constantly use it over and over to remain immortal, or only lasted while they were inside the temple and they became mortal again after they left. Not to mention Indy's father being dead by Kingdom of the Crystal Skull despite drinking from the Grail as well.

It must have had something to do with crossing the seal, because when Indy fell into the crevice, he was saved by his father. That wouldn't be necessary if he were immortal unless the concern was Indy being trapped in the crevice.

Indiana Jones 5 Screenplay Will be Written by David Koepp
INDIANA JONES 5 DAVID KOEPP MOVIE NEWS
    BY MAX EVRY
    ON MARCH 18, 2016

The Hollywood Reporter, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull screenwriter David Koepp will return to pen the latest adventure in the blockbuster franchise.

Yes, that’s the same David Koepp who cobbled together the all-over-the-map “Frankenscript” for the last movie from drafts by George Lucas, Jeff Nathanson and an uncredited Frank Darabont. That’s also the same David Koepp who wrote the poorly-received Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, directed the very poorly received Johnny Depp vehicle Mortdecai and, yes, created a TV series called “Hack.”

Now comes the good news: For those who like to believe that George Lucas was the one-and-only reason for Crystal Skull‘s shortcomings (aliens, fridge nuking, monkey swinging, etc), it is still unclear what, if any, involvement Lucas currently has on Indy 5. Lucas previously stated to Vulture in 2011 that he and Spielberg had decided on a story and genre for this new installment but had yet to find an adequate MacGuffin/treasure for Dr. Jones to go after. If Lucas’s experience is anything like it was on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, then Disney may have already thrown all his ideas on the scrapheap.

Also, having read the Darabont draft of the Crystal Skullscript, we can say that one thing Koepp did do better was keep the references to previous films to a bare minimum, which hopefully will continue into this new adventure. And, to be fair, Koepp did also write the scripts for Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Spider-Man.

Steven Spielberg, who directed all four previous films, will helm Indiana Jones 5 with star Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. Franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce.

Famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones was introduced in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark – one of AFI’s 100 Greatest American Films of All Time – and later thrilled audiences in 1984’s prequel Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The four films have brought in nearly $2 billion at the global box office.

Indiana Jones will return to the big screen on July 19, 2019.

Come on, didn't either of you guys go to Indy school?

Knight: You have chosen wisely. But the Grail cannot pass beyond the great seal. That is the boundary and the price of immortality.

i.e. Leave the chamber, no immortality. So Donovan was screwed from day one.

Indiana Jones 5 Is ‘Continuation’ Of Crystal Skull Story

After reprising Han Solo in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Harrison Ford is preparing to return to his other classic character for Lucasfilm: Indiana Jones. Walt Disney Pictures recently announced that the currently untitled Indiana Jones 5 will hit theaters in July 2019, with Steven Spielberg once again calling the shots from the director’s chair. The filmmaker’s longtime collaborator David Koepp will pen the script.

Since Lucasfilm was so successful at relaunching the galaxy far, far away, there are many curious to see if they’ll be able to restore the archeologist to his former glory – and what (if any) strategies that made Star Wars 7 a massive critical and commercial hit will be carried over to this property. It will be interesting to see how Indy 5 is handled, particularly since Ford will have celebrated his 77th birthday by the time the movie premieres. For their part, the studio is confident in their leading man and are looking to make the project a proper sequel that picks up where viewers last left off.

While at CinemaCon (hat tip Variety), franchise producer Frank Marshall reiterated that Ford will not be recast as Indiana Jones, believing that the character is so iconic, only one actor can play him. This stance eliminates any chance of Indy 5 being a prequel of sorts, with Ford merely bookending an adventure headlined by a younger thespian in the role. As fans theorize about what could happen, that was one possibility discussed, but Marshall revealed in his interview that the latest installment will be a “continuation” of the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull story.

Marshall did not elaborate on what exactly he meant by that, meaning his statement will only fuel more speculation. For the most part, the Indiana Jones series is not one known for its continuity; the previous films more or less existed as standalone narratives, with only a few references to each other and no overarching story beats that carried over. Things were a little different for Crystal Skull, which brought back Raiders of the Lost Ark‘s Marion Ravenwood, but it was still primarily self-contained. One would think that’ll be the case with Indy 5, especially since the Crystal Skull plot was fully resolved when the end credits rolled. Making a direct followup to that film would be a mistake, but some continuation might be necessary.

When moviegoers last saw Indiana Jones, he was a newly married man, looking to settle down with a family. Even though Crystal Skull was not as beloved as the original trilogy, it would still be somewhat jarring for Indy 5 to just ignore what came before completely. Karen Allen and Shia LaBeouf don’t have to necessarily return as Marion and Mutt Williams, but they should still be mentioned in some capacity. For example, the absence of Henry Jones, Sr. and Marcus Brody in Crystal Skull was explained via lines of dialogue. If Spielberg would prefer to surround Indy with a new supporting cast, he could do that again and still have the fifth film be a “continuation.”

It will most likely be a while before fans learn what’s exactly going on with Indiana Jones 5, however. Spielberg has a pretty full plate at the moment. He’s currently working on Ready Player One for a March 2018 release, and will then move to the historical drama The Kidnapping of Edgardo Morata, which is eyeing an awards season 2017 bow. Arguably, Indy 5 is on the director’s back burner for the time being, as he tackles his other commitments. Production on Dr. Jones’ next adventure probably won’t start until 2018 at the earliest, so until then, fans will have to make do with hypothesizing.

By continuation I hope they mean that the film starts with Indy and Marion laying flowers at Mutt's grave and then an adventure starts.

  23. There's a chance that Ford, Spielberg, Lucas (I'm sure he might want to be involved to a degree) and any number of people affiliated with the project will be dead before this gets into production.

  24. Exactly. What it saved Indy's dad, it didn't grant immortality to either them (Indy's dad was dead in the next film because Connery couldn't do it any longer)
