It's a derivative of rock n roll. like prog/disco/punk etc...

blues to rock 'n' roll, rock 'n' roll to rock, rock to hard rock, hard rock to heavy metal.

Everything comes back to the blues, really. But, yes, heavy metal is 'rock 'n' roll' about three or four times removed.

    Metal is post-modern "Rock".
It is an offshoot of RnR, of course.
The exaggeration and intensity is the post-modern innovation on previous hard driving Rock of all stripes.

Also just a marketing term, a hook to sell the music, just like "rock and roll"

The last metal band I saw play live was Motorhead, and Lemmy first words were, "We are Motorhead. We play rock n roll," Then all hell broke loose.

My inner musical pedant wanted to correct him, but I didn't think I should. He lived through the musical evolution that produced heavy metal, so he can interpret the genres and their labels how he sees fit.

It depends.. Are Motorhead and Metallica r&r? Yes, IMHO

Does these silly North European female-fronted pseudo-goth, neoclassical-wannabe, guitar-wankers have anything to do remotely with r&r? Absolutely not

I see no difference between metal and rock n roll. The drumming of Bill Ward has more roll than Bruce Costello and the Stones. I feel it.

I see metal as a sub-genre of rock that has grown into a genre of its own. Rock and metal are inextricably connected through musical lineage, but metal has developed its own musical ecosystem with its own genres separate from rock.

As far as whether metal is “rock and roll” or not, I think it depends on how you define the term. For a lot of people “rock and roll” refers to the really early stuff from the 50’s and 60’s, whereas for others it is synonymous with “rock.” I usually think of “rock and roll” as more basic and rootsy stuff and “rock” as the more general umbrella term, but that’s just me.
So to answer the question, I would never call metal “rock and roll,” but I wouldn’t argue with someone who did. I would, however, say it’s fair to say metal is a form of rock, even if it has taken on a life of its own.

If since you're going to get technical, nothing since the 50s is pure rock n roll, made by the likes of Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry etc, but through the years, it changed and just about anything with loud guitars is rock music. Even as the Beatles progressed, they didn't play pure rock n roll anymore, music on the foundation of I-IV-V blues based chord progression. But i metal falls under rock music as a broad genre.

Deep Purple - pre IN ROCK (February 19th, 1970) performing: Speed King, Wring That Neck, Child in Time & Mandrake Root.

John Peel (referring to the opening number, Speed King) ~ "Now that's the way I like my Deep Purple, good stompin' rock 'n' roll."

The entire event is available on Deep Purple In Concert.

I wouldn't call them rock'n'roll at all, nor would they. I still like a lot of metal, most for nostalgic reasons but that's not what I listen to these days.

Agree except for Metallica. Lars is the most un-rock'n'roll drummer you can think off. Completely lacks swing and ANY feel.
