What is a cultural force in music now anyway? it's everything at the fingertips & a disposable mainstream

It’s still being created and performed, but the overwhelming majority of the bands creating and performing it are picking over the carcass of the genre and taking a bit from here and a bit from there when rock was a living, vital genre.

There are still barbershop quartets, but the genre as a whole is a museum piece. That’s where rock is headed, and it’s mostly already there.

    What is rock music?

Electric guitar oriented music? Or some sub-genre?

Is it a sound, or an ethos?

Is it supposed to piss off your parents?

Is it about the expression of raging young hormones?

A lot to consider, to honestly answer.

I would presume absolutely not. Even if old fogies like me who don’t keep up say otherwise. The kids are always alright.

  8. Hard rock is doing well. Rock is doing fine. It just not a genre talked about on a Beatles/Audiophile forum. Context is everything.

If OP means rock like the seventies, then yes. Writing and performing such music today is like being a Civil War re-enactor.

If we all agree that rock is dead then can we permanently cancel these threads forever? For the good of the forums, let’s all lie and say it’s over and then we can go back to our day jobs of dissecting all things Beatles and insulting young people’s music.

Go buy the thousands of good rock albums that were released from the 60's to the 90's and Rock will be very much alive in your home.

These threads suck. They're always started by people who just come in to troll and then disappear.

On the off chance they come back, and you're dumb enough to waste your time giving 100s of suggestions of bands they'd like and resources on where to find all these bands, they just ignore them. Waste of time.

Yeah, but if someone took all them things, put it in a pot and stirred, they might come up with something new.

It's on life support. But the back-market for all things rock is as strong as ever. Just take a look at the Record Store Day 2020 offerings.

I was listening to this great record last night, Effloresce by a group called Oceansize. Can't believe these guys weren't bigger, they were great.

I went to an indie rock show on a weekend night at a local all-ages venue, and everyone there was over about 35, with the average age between 40-50. At an all-ages venue. My impression, as a member of a band and as a member of the audience, is that there are way fewer people under 35 participating in the ‘humans playing instruments together’ music scene.

No? It dominated for a couple decades, what else could you what? People probably got tired of it and wanted to listen to different things.
