I gave you very clear cut criteria. Not sure what else you're looking for.

I'll give you the Lumineers but mainly you're talking about indie bands that scored top ten hits in the much smaller UK market. Halestorm signed with Atlantic in 2005 and released their first EP in 2006, so not exactly new on the scene, but fair enough. Still, it's not a very extensive or impressive list of major chart toppers.

Then allow me to rephrase. Is a number one on Billboard's mainstream or alternative rock chart a significant hit IYO?

Once again I have to ask; are you saying that those bands are not quality mainstream rock?

Tristero, since you mentioned that the UK is a much smaller market; IYO is a rock song outside the mainstream if it's not sung in English?

It is hard to imagine a non-English language album making a major impact on the mainstream rock charts outside of that specific country of origin. That isn't to say that it isn't rock or that it isn't good but it's not likely to be mainstream.

Alternative chart? No, I probably wouldn't consider that to be a major hit. The mainstream chart? Maybe, depending on the competition and duration of the performance. If it just shoots to the top one week against weak competition before dropping off, I'm not sure that I would call it significant.

Then if a song tops both charts, is that one a significant hit IYO?

Potentially. Do you have an example in mind?

I didn't say anything about a chart. I'm just asking if a non-English rock song is outside the mainstream.

It depends on the duration of the sales performance and the competition. It would need to be more than just a one week fluke for me to view it as significant.

IF every answer is "it depends", that tells me you'll shift the goal line with every reply. So I'll just go back to your original post.

"Show me some major new rock bands that have emerged in the last ten years that are regularly scoring significant hits." Since the US and the UK singles charts are a wasteland for rock & roll, there are none.

Gort can lock the thread now.

Is this supposed to be a joke? I don't recall the phenomenon that was MTV TRL existing in the late 1980s/early 1990s, which Britney took advantage of very thoroughly.

Maybe she thinks music is merely one aspect of her career.

She's obviously taken advantage of every key opportunity afforded to her and has been very handsomely rewarded. Very smart indeed.

You really revived a thread that's been dormant for well over a year for that?

    Why?

Perhaps he wanted to revive the argument that rock is somehow dead because all of the pop music that he doesn't like is on the top?

Obviously, if you're a fan of guitar-based music, the world as in mainstream music has changed and one doesn't have to like it. There's no stigma in it. If Russian folk tunes played on accordion and not electronic dance music was the current rage it'd be the same problem.
