    Yes - you need to reduce volume.
    It's quite louder than passive...I'm still guilty of occasionally neglecting to reduce volume even after a year. Can be startling...

    I tube rolled with the following, but only the 2 tubes on the right:

    - RCA Redbase 5692 (good clarity, good mids and bass)
    - Sylvania 6SN7GTA (even more of the 5692 including more air)
    - Pope Holland (totally awesome but lose a smidge on the bass)
