When I heard this song, I thought this sounds familiar to me..

It's Deep Purple "Child in time"

Besides that, this is a indeed a beautiful and evocative album full of breezy sounds just like the cover...my favourite song is Hot Summer Day.

    Opinions?

I just got a nice original LP a few weeks ago. Good stuff. I think they later stole something from Deep Purple in return!

From the Wikipedia page of Child In Time:

Deep Purple's Ian Gillan has said that "Child in Time" is based on It's a Beautiful Day's psychedelic song "Bombay Calling".[2] It's a Beautiful Day in return borrowed Purple's "Wring That Neck" and turned it into "Don and Dewey" on their second album Marrying Maiden (1970).

I got this from the $1 bin, It's better than the critics said, if not particularly memorable. I seem to recall it gets kind of intense in the middle.

Bombay Calling was originally performed by David LaFlame's previous band Orkustra, which became infamous for band member Bobby Beausoleil's involvement with the Manson family gang. Beausoleil was originally sentenced to death after being convicted of first degree murder in the death of Gary Hinman, but his sentenced was commuted to life in prison when California abolished the death penalty. He remains in prison today.

Great album as it is their best. I have the vinyl, the SFS CD and the early Dutch CD.

    Great album...

I thought I read somewhere way back then that "Girl With No Eyes" was based on a Little Orphan Annie poster, but I may be misremembering. It was the 60s.

    Got my NOLP last year.

White Bird has graced the TT often since then.

You've got turned 'round. "Calling Bombay" came first. Ian Gillan acknowledged the "inspiration."

Fantastic album... I have it one two different LPs (one being an early Half-Speed) and a CD.

"Hot Summer Day" is a wonderful song from it yet to be mentioned in this thread.

And another big thumb's up for me for "Girl with No Eyes"

This was another band that was fVcked over by the evil Matthew Katz.

I've not been a Deep Purple fan other than owing Machine Head but this time of information is so very intriguing and interesting to me.

The first album is a very good album with some standout tracks. The albums that follow, for me, are are all disappointments.

They're different for sure. But Marrying Maiden is lovely.

How would you describe the "differences"?

Less haunting. Less classical influence and more country/folk on Maiden, with a less welcome party-band vibe afterwards.

Do they bust out the kazoos? That is always the BIG DISAPPOINTMENT during this era.

"White Bird" was written in Seattle while the LaFlammes spent a particularly wet winter there.

It's a shame this has never been properly reissued on CD (afaik). I have never seen a CD with a decent reproduction of all the artwork.

"Marrying Maiden" side one is as good as the material on the first album, side two disintegrates after the first song, other band members contribute their own songs, and they are poor to awful. The next two albums, "Choice Quality Stuff" and "Today", are progressively worse.

You can thank Matthew Katz for that.

great album , but I like all their albums
(I remember that during the 70's it used to be a very rare album here in Germany ,
original copies cost around 100 Deutsch Marks, which was a lot)

this is one of the best and certainly most intense live performances I have ever seen ,
the closer the thunderstorm , the wilder the band's performance
