Guttenberg just gave a very positive review of the new Polk L200 paired with the new Cambridge CXA81.

That combo would leave you $2k for analog and cables. Fairly healthy budget for each element.

    Go used on the speakers:
Harbeth PSESR or C7ES3 can be found for under 1500 and 2000 respectively. That's not even money you're spending, it's an investment because they will keep their value.

Amp: Yamaha A-S1000, A-S801 or similar can be found used for around 500 euro.

Turntable: used Linn LP12 in perfect condition for around 1500 including cart. If you want to go new, you can find deals on the Pro-Ject Classic SB package including Ortofon Quintet Red mc cart for around 1000 euro. I love that table and you could always upgrade the cart later (not that there is anything wrong with the Quintet Red).

This way, you can have a top shelf system and keep 1000 for records and accessories.

    I'd roughly go
    - Speakers/stands - 2k (maybe more)
    - Turntable/cart - 1.5k
    - Amp/phono stage - 1.5k

Could get a killer system for that especially used.

Shop smart. Compromises always have to be made somewhere when you fix a price limit. Out of the three pieces you get, try to get at least one that will go the distance and not need upgrading for the foreseeable future. Spend the most on that piece. Shop used for the other two because basically, you haven’t enough money left for two additional NEW pieces that will be worthwhile nor likely to have any resale value.

This. Unless you have a chance to address the room in which case:

    1000 (turntable & cartridge)
    1000 amp
    2000 speakers
    1000 room acoustics

  8. Regarding used components, although you do not know the history of anything you buy used, if they are relatively new then the risk is minimal. Shipping damage to the turntable could be a concern. Also expect corner dings and other signs of use on the speakers. Still, you can purchase used for around 50% of MSRP (or better) and you’ll get a $10,000 system for your $5,000.

Once you are at that level, you can get some really great stuff—things that sold new for $6000 can even be had for as low as $2000. For example, Gallo Reference 3.5’s for $2000-$2500, Bel Canto REF500M for $2000-$2500

A Rega Planar 6 with the factory fitted Exact MM cartridge, a Rega Elex R amp with built in MM phono stage, and floor-standing Monitor Audio Silver 300’s would be within budget if you are looking to buy new, with some change for cables etc. The 300s at $1600, as in an earlier post, seems a bargain.
