Funny... I saw them on the NINJA tour too and my friends and I didn't go in until NIN was almost done... we were having too much fun in the parking lot!

I completely agree. If there was ever an album that seriously blew my mind it was the first time I listened to Nothing's Shocking. Had never heard anything quite like it. Amazing album.

Don't mind them as they sound quite unique. Liked Ritual De Lo Habitual.

Huge fan since 91-92. Anyone remember the censored cover for Ritual? That's the one I remember the music stores in the malls in Canada having.

I've been a fan since the MTV heydays, and come back to them every now and then.

Now I've been listening constantly to Jane's Addiction, and other Perry Farrell related stuff, for the last couple of weeks, and they sound better than ever. Truly amazing band that have climbed quite a few steps on my band list during this time! I really enjoy every album enormously. The "Live in NYC" album has to be one of the coolest and best live albums ever made...

I saw them in Stockholm back in 2003 and remember it to be one hell of a show. Had to check out the setlist, and I understand why it was such a great evening:
    Up the Beach
    Stop!
    Ain't No Right
    True Nature
    Been Caught Stealing
    Three Days
    Everybody's Friend
    Just Because (Acoustic)
    Strays
    The Riches
    Ocean Size
    Mountain Song
    Jane Says

Apart from Jane's I have loved the Satellite Party album ever since it came out. I think it sounds very similiar to The Great Escape Artist, and the Jim Morrison song Woman In The Window is simply beautiful. I also love how Perry "sneaks in" a few words from Touch Me in the song before as well.

Never listened much to Porno For Pyros back in the days, so it's really nice to have some "new" Farrell stuff to explore. Although I knew almost the whole Cursed Female for some reason I can't remember...

I really liked that first Porno For Pyros album. I doesn't seem to get talked about very often.

The first Porno For Pyros album is a beautiful, twisted dark monster living in a world of its own.
    A very underrated LP.

The second one has some good tracks but is quite all over the shop IMHO.

I saw them twice in Australia in 1996 with Mike Watt on bass, and they were absolutely mind blowing.
Would love to see a reuinion tour!

I absolutely love "Kimberly Austin" from the 2nd one. And Tahitian Moon is ok. After that, I couldn't tell you anything about it, as I've forgotten!

This is a great article. I love how Perry and Dave talked about how their sound evolved. Loved when they talked about how as individuals they had different musical sensibilities and because of this and many other factors they came up with such a unique and brilliant style.

IMO, Jane's Addiction is one of the most important bands of their era, and since then for that matter. And they all survived! (Sadly, family members excluded).

Oh my god! That's something you should never think about. BUT, there's lots of live full show videos. Not quite the same, but...small consolation. Although I would have killed to see them live between 1989-1996. Total psychedelic circus to go along with the sheer brilliance of this band. Man!

Earlier tonight I watched live videos of two of my favorite songs of theirs. Ocean size and Mountain Song. There's lots of live versions of these songs and EVERY version of these performances are just utterly spectacular!

WOW. That was a great year for them as far as live shows. I'm sure half the fun of seeing them live was the three ring circus that accompanied their live shows.

Was that the first lolla show? Another nod to Perry for the idea. And was that the show that also had Rage Against the Machine? There's a Lolla clip from a much later show that had Tom Morello playing on Mountain Song with Dave. Need I Say more? Too bad Perry's voice was gone by then. But the guitars alone are a shredder's wet dream!

The show I saw of the 1991 Lolla was in Dallas, so no Rage at that time. Ernie C. of Body Count joined the band when they played the Sly Stone cover with Ice T. There was a great "back and forth" duel between Ernie and Dave.

My first glimpse of Rage was as the first act for Lolla 1993, followed by another then unknown band called Tool. I still can't believe those bands ended up being bigger than the other bands on the 1993 lineup. I was pretty upset that Porno For Pyros wasn't playing that year, but Alice In Chains and Primus were great as closing acts.

Even worse, The Replacements were here a few months later (at least I have a consolation recording of that one).

Count me in as a serious fan. The early comparisons to Led
Zeppelin only left me disaappointed, especially in that it took
me a while to appreciate Perry's vocals. I did eventually find
him to be quite amazing. Dave refined his playing from more
of a sloppy shred on the first live album to his more tasteful
and unique style forming nicely on Nothing's Shocking and
fully manifest on Ritual De Lo Habitual. That last great album
and especially 'Three Days' are an epic beast!

I also was fortunate to have seen these guys all the way back at the Scream Club in the very early days (1987-88?) all the way through their initial break-up (I was at the three pre-1996 shows you posted stubs for, and probably a dozen others) . I have to be honest, I was not fan at those early shows, I thought they were sort of Led-Zep wannabes and I found Perry to be just too obnoxious to take! I was more of a Thelonious Monster/Chili Peppers guy and didn't quite get the JA mania in LA at the time. That is until they did a headline run at the Universal Amphitheater (1990?), (with NIN opening!) and damn, they had progressed light years in their material, live sound and musicianship, and Perry had dialed it down just a bit and I was honestly blown away. As I am sure all you fellow music snobs can attest, it is not easy to turn around a musical opinion once you think you've decided on a band, but in this case I had to own up to myself that I had gotten it wrong about these guys, they really were the ****! Of course, seeing them now is more like a stroll down memory lane, but I feel so lucky to have seen them in that era.

Jane's reminds me of being a teenager. They're one of the few bands that I listen to, and become emotional sometimes. They remind me of people and places that aren't here anymore. To be able to just go back to the 'good old days' one more time...sigh.

I can't remember the year but it was one of the early ones. It was in Chicago and that's the one where Rage, Tool and NIN played (and of course Jane.) Off the charts!
