    Before "Big Brother":

This is Janis Joplin as Blues Historian; turning a small audience on to some obscure and forgotten performers, whose music would serve as the foundation for an entire genre yet to come. It’s straight acoustic; no drums, no crowds. Just Janis and a small group of people gathered to hear some samples of Rural Blues, done by an enthusiast from Texas.
    Hope you enjoy. :)

Is there any documentation of who was accompanying her on this recording?

Janis had strong roots. I would have been interested to see if she would return to these roots later in her career had she lived longer. It may have given her more credibility, as I think her musical talents were not adequately recognized with many unfairly dismissing her as just a histrionic hippy druggy.

When jorma decided to move from upstate NY to Ohio in the early 90s he had a final bash at his old place. A limited amount of tickets were sold and a few of us managed to grab some. Hot tuna and roy bookbinder played. He was selling anything he did not want to pack and carry including guitars, amps, posters and more. Among the items was the famous reel to reel as mentioned earlier. My friend john bought it. Can't recall how much the asking price was but it wasn't a lot. I haven't seen him for a long time but I assume he still has it.

This is extraordinary stuff. I mean, Janis really sounds like she could have appeared on a '20s lacquer disc Blues record and nobody would have noticed the difference. For years, I've held an assertion that Janis was the next evolutionary leap in Blues singing in a line that went back to Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. Listening to this only further reinforces my feelings. My God! I loved listening to this. Since I'm originally from Santa Clara, I've got to talk to Jorma Kaukonen one of these days and pick his brain on the different places he knows there. I bet he knows all of Old Town and the University Of Santa Clara area which were my old stomping grounds. I'd love to learn if Janis knew Santa Clara as well as he did.
