I bought a 45 of the Monkees' "Valleri" at the flea market in Harajuku, Tokyo, and the picture sleeve folds out to a 1968 calendar:

At the same flea market visit, I found a 45 of the Ventures performing two recent (1965) Japanese hits by Yuzo Kayama (whose image is inset in the top right corner):

I also found the 45 by Yuzo Kayama with the original versions:

Note that Kayama is playing a Mosrite Ventures Model guitar, which was gifted to him by the Ventures when they toured Japan together.

A big job is right. The WGFA & Summertime Blues sleeves are the two easiest Japan Who 7” picture sleeves to find and are the least expensive. After that, they start getting more & more expensive & harder and harder to find, especially when you start on their 60’s sleeves. It’s lots of fun hunting them down, though! Good luck!

Zwolo, that first one is rare as hell. The other 3 are generally in most stores in the $2 boxes.

    Nappy Head

    Year: 1971
rough value: $? none on discogs and oddly very little demand.
rarity: never seen it. unusual for a Japanese band to get a j-pressing with their first ever release. Japan were onto this band early. Good eye.

And that was that. 1981 and done. Did Japan Inc wisely decide they weren't going to press issues of Gazza's subsequent excruciating fedora'd foray into crappy dance music? I think they goddamn did you know.

I have some stuff at www.artofthesingle.com. No search function yet and it’s very basic but I think I did a good job on the 45s and cd singles. More to be added after I recover from COVID.

    Year: 1979
    rough value: $18
    rarity: have seen this one.

Gap of 4 years and Japan passed on releasing any Stranglers singles from 1979 to 1983? Interesting to me that the Japan label bigwigs seemed to have a sixth sense about when to cut bait on j-pressings, they seemed to judge it perfectly when a band had flamed out creatively. Which doesnt quite explain the last one...

    European Female
    b/w Savage Breast

    Year: 1983
    rough value: $80
rarity: Guessing the supply and demand explains why this fairly tepid outing is an $80 single. One of those 7"s a store vendor might unwittingly put in the cheapies bin thinking (rightfully) it wasn't the bands best outing...

And that was that for The Stranglers.

    Year: 1973
rough value: $1,000. This is a $1,000 dollar record. Is there anything left in your bowels? Not anymore there's not.
rarity: You could live in Japan for 1,000 years and you will still never see this record.

And that was it for the Stooges in Japan. Fittingly, a hailstorm that quickly passed through town, devastingly everything, leaving the pretenders to pick up the pieces in the ensuing years.
