So retro in a good way. Always wanted a pair of these and came so close once. 2 Guys was running a 50% off close out of some sort. Hopped in my car and drove to the store, but already sold out.
Your Grand father was generous indeed! I bought my first real stereo out of a catalog, Dynaco A35 speakers, Sansui receiver and Dual turntable, and had it shipped to my dorm in college back in 1974 and it was much cheaper than a pair of JBL100's. The JBL's were the speakers us college boy music enthusiasts all drooled over back in the day.
Harbeth 3-ways cost a LOT more ... If I were in the market for a speaker of that size and driver array, I'd seriously consider the new L100's for this reason: being able to "shoot the room" with an RTA and adjust the mid and treble drivers for a more accurate in-room response. Anyway, if JBL has upgraded the crossover and drivers to more modern spec, this could conceivably be a great speaker ... even for $4k.
I doubt it, according to google, JBL is manufactured in China now. Then again they might assemble in California.
4 k c'mon. The little guy isn't getting any. Probably decent prices on used ,maybe. But not for me. I remember people buying them in the 70's
I really dig orange. We have orange throw pillows...orange artwork...orange lava lamps, etc.. I don’t know if I’d want my speaker grills in orange though. Anyway, right out of High School I got a sweet break from a family friend who had converted his garage into a recording studio. He was teaching classes through Denver Free University, and I latched on and learned everything I could from him and eventually, he let me be the engineer at his home studio, doing band demos and whatnot. Anyway, he had a pair of these JBL’s mounted on the wall in his home studio, and no matter what....nothing I ever mixed there sounded the same anywhere else. I thought they looked cool though.
The front EQ plate states “Northridge, CA USA”. Not sure if that suggests “Made In The USA”, or simply designed in the USA...
L100s are one of the few speakers imho that look better with the grillls on. Beautiful design feature.
I dig the throw-back colors of the 70s...reminds me of the Brady Bunch decor. Which begs the question... Why is Avocado Green not a grill color option?!?!
That's indeed what they're suggesting, but they're definitely not saying it, and there's likely a good reason for that.
If you zoom in on the nameplate on the rear panel in the images on the Music Direct website linked in the first post (JBL - L100 Classic Bookshelf Speakers (Pair) ), it looks like it says 'Designed and Engineered in USA' followed by 'Made in Indonesia'. $4K does seem kind of pricey to me for made in Indonesia.
