Not heard pre Eldorado albums in a long time, I’ll have to re-purchase them. Have DCC Eldorado cd (ear candy ).

Some great moments on those. Oh No Not Susan, Kuiama, 10538.....

I would suggest you go even back to the very beginning and check out The Idle Race.

As I pointed out the other day on here, FOON is made up of old recordings and modern digital recordings, then that interview I posted, where he said that one was pulled off the shelve and re-recorded.

FOON is what it is! a mix of old new and From Out Of Nowhere dusted off and recent recordings. That's probably the truth. Even the song about Wembley concerts is at least 18 months plus old. I suspect RT probably made that piano solo before his illness.

If this is mostly archive and dusted off songs, it really opens up a question about what else of this great standard, could be released.

The problem is the record companies Sony and Warner, need to get busy and at least, in the UK make some moves.

Probably 'Discovery' as it was #1 for 5 weeks in the UK. unless anyone else has other sales figures? I could be wrong.

Going purely by certifications, it would be Discovery. Double Platinum in the US, Platinum in the UK and multi-Platinum in several territories.

Next up would be Xanadu - it did 2 million US and Gold in the UK. Of course, certifications are not wholly representative. I'd be willing to bet Out of the Blue sold more than 1 million copies in the US, for example.

    Chart success.
What was the appeal of Discovery, disco elements?

Xanadu > JL&ONJ should have become lovers. Thought her voice serviced JL’s music very well.

Cool. I think Time is their only LP that is consistent most of the way through, so in ranking the others, for me it comes down to how many good-to-great songs are on each. So something like:

    Time - (like an 8.5)
    On the Third Day
    A New World Record
    Discovery
    Zoom
    Xanadu
    Face the Music
    Out of the Blue
    Balance of Power
    Secret Messages
    Eldorado
    Everything else

If I had to guess, I'd say it was the strength of the 4 charting singles? It's also the the only LP with two US Top 10 hits: Shine a Little Love, and Don't Bring Me Down - which was their highest charting single in the US.

    Go Jeffy, it's your birthday:)

Yeah, her lead vocal on that track is ethereal. They did a bunch of takes (8?), all in one day. Then Jeff picked the two best for each lyric and double-tracked every line, all the way through the song.

ONJ has said a few times she never got to know Jeff. She only interacted with him briefly during the recording of her vocal, once or twice during promotion, and virtually never again afterwards.

Here's how I rank ELO albums as of today (and this ranking is fluid with only the top 3 set in stone)

    A New World Record
    Eldorado
    Out Of The Blue
    Face The Music
    Discovery
    Balance Of Power
    From Out Of Nowhere
    On The Third Day
    Time
    Zoom
    Secret Messages
    Alone In The Universe
    ELO 2
    The Electric Light Orchestra

The only omissions from this set (not sure if all B sides are included in the bonus tracks) are the ELO tracks from the movie Xanadu (which are essential!) - I think if they ever do a complete box set of ELO's entire output it would nice to have the albums as they were and all the bonus tracks / B-sides / non-album tracks on separate discs.

An included Xanadu would of been nice, including Drum Dreams. Being under a different label (MCA) not sure who owns the rights anymore.

Well funnily enough, at the time of release the UK version of Xanadu was on Jet/CBS Records with the ONJ side licenced from MCA, and in the US I assume it was the other way around, i.e. on MCA with the ELO side licenced from Jet/CBS, so I do wonder how that works now...?

    Screwy!
No clue, let's hope these master's weren't lost in the fire!
It's possible the US manufacture used dubs.

These were released in jewels separately as well. Picked up a slew of them when released for cheap at Wal-Mart years ago
