Jesse Malin has been recording music since he was 12! Originally with the NYC punk band Heart Attack, which he left when he was 16 he moved on to release music with D Generation, Bellvue, The Finger and as a solo artist. Here is my ranking of all 18 of his full length albums, all studio and live efforts included. Feel free to comment and provide your own rank below! 18. The Last War (1980 - 1984) - Heart Attack. A compilation of the bands EPs. 17. We Are **** You - The Finger 16. On Your Sleeve 15. D Generation - The 1st D Generation album 14. Love It To Life - The Live Sessions 13. Mercury Retrograde - Live In New York City 12. Love It To Life - studio album 11. Outsiders 10. Nothing Is Anywhere - D Generation 9. Through The Darkness - D Generation 8. No Lunch - D Generation 7. To Be Somebody - Bellvue 6. Sunset Kids 5. Messed Up Here Tonight - b sides/EP tracks + live compilation 4. New York Before The War 3. Glitter In The Gutter 2. Fine Art Of Self Destruction 1. The Heat
I love D Generation and Jesse's first couple of solo albums but I have to say I lost interest after a while. So I don't know all of them..but of the ones I know I'd go... 1. D Generation s/t - classic 2. No Lunch - not quite as classic but still great. I know a lot of people prefer this one, but imo the first one is the one. 3. The Fine Art of Self Destruction - A really great album. 4. Through the Darkness. Not as good as the fist two D Gen albums but still some great songs. The Neil Young cover is amazing. 5. The Heat - not as good as Fine Art but some really good stuff. I love "Silver Manhattan" 6. Bellvue - some good stuff on here. Kind of in between D Gen and his solo stuff...I mean, it's literally between them but also the sound. 6. Heart Attack - I don't have this CD but I have a couple of tracks on another comp (NY Thrash) - "God is Dead" is awesome. but not something I'd listen to all the time
I never got into his solo stuff but I LOVE No Lunch. I go back to it regularly, way more than the other DGeneration records. The first was great when it came out but I thought they stepped up their game in every way on No Lunch
I'm surprised I did not see this thread last Nov. I just saw him in Oct/Nov. I knew him via Through The Darkness, the one D Gen album I have. Which I love. I knew enough that I was not expecting a D Gen like set (but one song would have been nice). It was an excellent show and I picked Sunset Kids at the show. Based on the comments above, I have some listening to do.
Going by his solo output (and not counting compilations): 1. Fine Art of Self Destruction 2. Love it to Life 3. The Heat 4. Glitter in the Gutter 5. Sunset Kids 6. Outsiders 7. New York Before the War Fine Art of Self Destruction is a true masterpiece and a desert island disc for me.
Wow ~ Nice to see a Jesse Malin-dedicated thread! Way to go, OP! Another vote for Sunset Kids!!! I'm not familiar w/all of them, but next I'd go w/The Heat. I've been listening to both a Lot since early summer 2020 when I learned of him & doing all I can to spread the word on him around here! I've "attended" 3 of his Livestream shows from The Bowery Electric, which have been outstanding! I learned of him b/c I did some late night googling to see if we'd ever from from Ryan Adams again (not getting into his biz here) & the article I found had a live clip upload of Jesse & Ryan performing together. From there, I listened to some more & even though I'd vowed not to do any more late-night purchases & I wasn't; I would just put them on a watch, or wish-list & return when alert to see if still resonated w/me - but that one, I did immediately purchase & it's phenominal! More wandering around on youtube & saw him w/Tommy Stinson/The Replacements. I'm not overly familiar w/them - a few times I have sampled different albums, but never did pull the trigger. From there, I learned about Tommy's Bash & Pop & also purchased Anything Could Happen - also, highly recommend that!
Bump this thread because Jesse Malin is great, "Fine Art of Self Destruction - 2003" is one of the great lost rock n roll albums
New record coming in September. Can't wait. Seeing my first post-vax indoor Jesse show on 4/3 at Bowery Electric.
Was thinking this morning about how many high caliber artists Jesse has commanded respect from. Lots of these folks have even recorded or performed with him. For a guy who is as "under the radar" as Jesse is, I think this is quite an impressive list and I'm sure I'm leaving out quite a few: Joe Strummer Bruce Springsteen Lucinda Williams Joey Ramone Alejandro Escovedo Deborah Harry Joan Jett Duff McKagan Everyone from Cheap Trick Billie Joe Armstrong Tim Armstrong (Rancid) Steve Earle Steven Van Zandt Ryan Adams Alan Vega (Sucide) Shane McGowan Tommy Stinson Pete Yorn Juliana Hatfield Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) Jakob Dylan Mike Ness Frank Turner Cait O'Riordan, Craig Finn (the Hold Steady) Wayne Kramer Tom Morello
