Yeah. "A" has a few songs that I like, but it's not a very good album, IMO. When the old band got fired, a lot of the Tull magic went with it.
That's what is worrying me a bit, as Anderson himself have said that they used some kind of substandard tapes for the "A" album, and that they are in a bad condition. I don't remember whether he meant multitrack tapes or the master tape.
Not really 'A' fan of this album - but it must be bought to avoid gaps in the set I am however very much looking forward to Broadsword, Under Wraps (yes, really!) , and Knave at some point. And of course Benefit
From what I have read, those who have heard the results are very satisfied about the remixes. If David Rees is allowed to publish FULL details on AND magazine, then an official anouncement should follow anytime soon.
Listening to A at work now on my JBL Clip 3. It’s better than I remember. I think side 2 is marred by too much fretless bass.
Yeah I will say that I gained some appreciation for all the projects. Passion Play and War Child both surprised me. I still prefer the Chateau tapes to PP, SW’s mixes open them all up, taking the mudiness away, giving the tapes some breathing room. And of course the extras are always fantastic.
As Nikki Actionpacked said "Working John, Working Joe" is a SftW outtake, as Ian was working on a solo album upto the point of release there could be other songs he held over from Tull. We know "Jack-a-Lynn" was already written, as it's for his wife that would make it a contender for the solo album. Fly By Night was co written with PJ Vitesse so it probably wasn't written for A, but maybe Walk into Light, End Game or Black and White Television were. There isn't a lot of keyboards on the late 81 songs, so I don't know if these would've been worked on with Eddie Jobson. Pendants corner: Two long time Tull members and a bass player who played on the last album tours and stayed on for 15 years. Anyway I'm looking forward to the A boxset a while lot more than another release of Benefit.
I might remember wrong but to my recollection, word in “circles” was that Slipstream is not part of this release. That can have changed ofcourse. Edit: what Laufi said was that there was both a disapointment and surprises. It was speculated that the disapointment was the omission of Slipstream.
