To quote myself.. I compared the waveforms in Audacity, I compared the DR values.. it all checks out.
2012 40th anniversary bookset: CD: 2012 Steven Wilson stereo remix, mastered by Peter Mew corrected DVD: 2012 Steven Wilson stereo remix in 96/24, mastered by Peter Mew 2012 Steven Wilson 5.1 surround mix, flat transfer 2022 40th anniversary bookset: CD: 2012 Steven Wilson stereo remix, "flat transfer" corrected DVD: 2012 Steven Wilson stereo remix in 96/24, "flat transfer" 2012 Steven Wilson 5.1 surround mix is the same as on the 2012 version
There's no Mew mix. Mew made the SW mix bright and loud with his mastering. That was removed as also SW didn't like it
I didn't get around to checking the DR but am glad that @maki881 did. The CD certainly sounded highly dynamic to me too. Haven't tried the DVD out yet.
The Steven Wilson mix is great. The MASTERING was atrocious That's why subsequent versions omit Peter Mew mastering
Of the stereo remix on the 2022 DVD? This.. just as the 2015 download version (which was broken down into eight parts, which ist not the case here).
This being St. Nikolaus Day, I decided to treat myself and placed an order for the CD/DVD set. My local B & M has promised it will be in my hands on Friday, but hinted that if I am free Thursday evening, I may have it even sooner...
The 2015 Thick As A Brick Steven Wilson Remix vinyl release is not a Peter Mew mastering is how I understand, correct?
It's all opinion, of course, but to my tastes Mew's mastering wasn't quite "atrocious." It was unnecessarily loud and bright for a classic recording that had done just fine for 40 years without those added characteristics, but by 2012 rock remaster standards it was really rather tame. That said, we are better off if the 2022 re-release truly features the unmastered transfer, as seems to be the case.
Just received my box set today. The DVD disc is faulty and doesn’t load to play. Does anyone else have this issue?
Can someone help me. I only have the 1997 Chrysalis remaster and I’m not an audiophile with a fabulous system. So Is the 50th Anniversary book set cd expected to be a significant improvement over that prior version especially considering I don’t have the set up for the dvd so won’t be listening to that disc at all? I did by the way pre-order the new book set as I have virtually all the others. Thx!!
It finally arrived two days ago in a neat package from Burningshed including postcards and coasters. I had heard the remix only once before and it had the Peter Mew mastering. Now, I'm generally not a fan of Peter Mew already but I remember thinking something may had gone wrong with it as it sounded really unnatural. As such, I wasn't able to fully appreciate the remix until I heard it again the way it was meant to sound and it is bloody good. "Thick as a Brick" is one of the Jethro Tull albums that sounded great even in the original mix, especially the Mobile Fidelity version, but I feel like Steven Wilson's remix is even better. It is faithful to the original but it also sounds more defined. The only moments I don't really love on the remix are the end of part 1 and the beginning of part 2 where I can hear a couple of changes compared to the original that do not sit that well with me. Other than that it's fantastic. Jethro Tull is one of these bands where I can't really decide what's my favorite album by them but this may be a good candidate. It has some great music, it flows great, it sounds great and it's also greatly hilarious. What a package! The bookset is also very worthy. I still haven't read the St. Cleve's Chronicle newspaper in full but I look forward to do it. The write-ups were already quite good back then but it's incredible how much these sets have evolved overtime: although it still contains a lot of interesting informations, it looks scarcer compared to the most recently released ones. Haven't played the DVD yet and, unfortunately, I still have no 5.1 equipment where to listen to the surround mix but when I'll finally get one I'll have a lot of catching up to do.
