Steven Wilson has upmixed to 5.1 from original stereo mixes before (the recent Gentle Giant/Octopus Blu-Ray and the King Crimson/In The Wake Of Poseidon DVD come to mind) but I assume that Ian Anderson wasn't keen on that idea here...or maybe there were too many tracks missing for them to embark upon it. On Octopus it was 3 out of 8 and on Poseidon I think it was about 1/4 of the album. For what it's worth, the 5.1 upmixes on those releases sound really good. Perhaps here it's a blessing in disguise - we end up with a leaner version of the album plus a (sort of) live performance of it remixed in stereo and 5.1 and a nice flat tranfser of the original mix. Could be worse.

Plan9, without asking you to divulge secrets, any suggestions for why upmixing wasn't done here?

It's one of the things I'm unsure of. It seems to me the reason does not come from Steven, but I can only speculate.
I know that not every stereo mix leads to a great surround upmix.
And I guess that when you are missing almost half the album's multis, but another recording of the entire album has them, upmixing must seem a little pointless.

Yeah - I figured that three missing tracks out of eight, as on Octopus, at least means that the majority of the album is getting a genuine remix. When it's half the album, it might not be worth it. For all I know the process of extracting the elements to allow the upmixing is super expensive.

No complaints here anyway. Can't wait to receive this in the post soon.

There's 6 or 7 really strong tracks on this remix. 3 or 4 are non album tracks. Now I want to hear advertising man lol

I said f... a few times when I realized this. Oh well, I'm sure all here will join me in thanking you. Any problems I had with the set certainly did not involve you.

  19. And Barrie was "Barriemore", but that didn't stick either.

So would you say that this reissue has served to make fans reappreciate the album in a positive way (hello APP) or not? Although I have not received my copy, I sense I will do.

For me personally, yes. I have not listened to this album front to back since the late 70s when I first purchased it....and hated it! I listened to the Steven Wilson remixes and flat transfer last night and not only is it not as bad as I remember...I enjoyed it very much.

Can't wait for the folk trilogy. As for Too old I'd replace Too old, crazed, bad eyed and taxi with strip, commercial, ragtime and cigar(orchestral). Would have been a pretty cool album then

  23. One cannot deny the great work done by all involved in this project. I listened to it over the weekend and it sounds great. That said, I still feel it is the bands weakest album both musically and conceptually to date.

As a both a fan and musician, I hate messed up credits.

Although we get paid for what we do, an accurate credit on a release is a commodity.

As long as he doesn't mix it. His work on the Paris 75 tape was not very good (unless the multi tracks sounded
    that bad).
