In Jimmy Webb's book "Tunesmith," which is fascinating reading, he talks about Phil Spector winning the Technical Excellence and Creativity Hall of Fame Award on 10/6/95. I'm posting it for those who haven't heard it before. Here's a quote from Phil:

"I get calls from the press about the deaths of everybody . . . and John [Lennon] of course was my closest friends for years and when Kurt Cobain died I got a lot of calls from the press telling me 'Oh, I haven't been this moved since John Lennon's death, would you like to make a comment?' And I said, 'Excuse me, you don't know the difference between John Lennon and Kurt Cobain?' And they say, 'No, no, no,' and I say, 'That's too bad, because Kurt Cobain did.'"
