Just finished watching a video of Nigel Kennedy playing Little Wing. He plays with so much emotion and feeling. Love the Kronos Quartet version of Purple Haze.
In terms of Hendrix covers the Fremont Group did a bunch of them circa 1971 whereby they excelled by not making any attempt to slavishly go note for note and more put everything into freedom of feel and improvisation. I wonder what @frank3si thinks of them?
Has the proposed track listing for the mixed but shelved 1969 live album ever been listed? Running order? I know it included songs from San Diego, LA Forum and RAH and ultimately became the basis for In The West.
Yes. Not sure of the sequence, but Fat Mattress and Van der Graaf Generator were the support groups on the 24th. Wooden Frog (aka Mason, Capaldi, Wood & Frog) and Soft Machine on the 18th.
I know several potential songs for it were mixed, but I’m not convinced they ever got as far as a track listing. Would be interested to know more as well, though.
The only guitarist that came close to Jimi's tone is Robin Trower in my opinion. Especially the first 2 albums.
Discogs, just wrong on so many things!!!! The sadest thing being, even when incorrect detail is highlighted it is never corrected.
Well to be fair, the sleeve & label of both this & the original vinyl make the same mistake, but yes, Discogs sucks!
And who, in their right mind would simply accept ANY timings from a record sleeve as being accurate anyway
I just listened to that Zayn cover of Angel and I’m truly disappointed. Was willing to give it a chance but it’s karaoke, he is literally singing to the original Hendrix track. Was hoping for something more original. He can sing but I’m not into his vocal style but if it helps spread awareness about Hendrix ok I guess.
Well someone on YouTube already has posted a reaction video to the Zayn cover of Angel. She absolutely loved it, having never heard the original and only recently having heard 1 or 2 of Jimi's songs for the 1st time. So although its mediocre to me as a fan of Hendrix music, hopefully it has the desired effect of exposing Jimi's artistry to new music lovers.
Stop being so magnanimous, such an attitude simply removes the outright whining opportunity some feel entitled to
It always amuses me that Alan Douglas thought he was responsible for the resurgence of interest in Hendrix’ music with what I like to call two sham albums Crash Landing and Midnight Lightning. The Experience Hendrix people should have known better than to associate themselves with someone who physically assaulted a woman. The number of women who are abused and/or killed by an intimate partner is staggering and heartbreaking.
That is a fair call and I agree with you. Ironically Jimi has physically assaulted women also on more than one occasion i believe.
I read that Jimi was quite chivalrous with women. There were accusations of violence about Jimi towards Kathy Etchingham in that dumb Curtis Knight book of the early 70s but Kathy denied those things ever happening. A few of Jimi’s other girlfriends also deny that Jimi was violent towards them. In an earlier interview Jimi stated that women counted amongst his closest friends as they helped him out when he was a struggling musician in New York. The Times newspaper described Jimi as a gentle peaceful man as did some of his fellow musicians.
