I certainly complain about AD quite a bit, but one thing I don't he gets credit for is sequencing albums. Concerts, Winterland, BBC1 where all excellently sequenced. Even Voodoo Soup, which I am not a big fan of, was sequenced well. It's something that EH lacks in my opinion. Their Winterland Box isn't sequenced well for instance nor the 2 disc BOG from a few years. back.

Only here on SHF would Alan Douglas be compared to Larry Buchanan. Gotta love this place. :shtiphat:

Speaking of Jimi playing live, it doesn't matter how small the audience was. We've seen this before. The simple fact is, this little performance is almost unfair to anybody else who's ever picked up a guitar and tried to break bread with it. If you can improv like this, you're in rarefied air.

Hey, we're an eclectic bunch ;)

My own thinking-just looking for good copy on the liner notes. He cared enough to pick good performances.

I`'ve heard Jimi's Train A Comin since 1968. I also enjoy collecting lists. Here are some of Jimi's better live performances. 50 Years of listening to the same ol, same ol songs, can get kind of boring after a while. I use the list to branch away from all time favourites..

Please feel free to comment on these performances, correct my errors and add performances I missed.

Great list but I'm guessing you haven't updated it since the Machine Gun 12-31-69 Fillmore East 1st Show album came out in 2016? For my money at least, the following deserve mentions as great versions of songs from that show:

    Bleeding Heart
    Hear My Train 'A Comin'
    Izabella
    Ezy Ryder

Also, how about either of the Band Of Gypsys versions of Stone Free (see Live At The Fillmore East or West Coast Seattle Boy)? - Yowsa :wtf:!

Thank you for taking the time to do this. It's a really neat list.

I think we should be able to cover all of these (and then some) as time goes on. For any shows that I happen to review, I'll try to remember to look back at your faves, and anyone else's, to keep this as full of a picture as possible. I'd like this thread to as much of a one-stop-shop as it can be.

This is a list I have compiled, from many threads here and elsewhere. I have tried to clean up all errors and to put the list in alpha order. I used the date scheme as year-month-day, because it is easy to sorting word.

All the songs are someone's favorite. Many who listed their listing favorite songs DID NOT list the date of performance or what LP they are found on. IE: Sunshine Of Your Love. Many of the entries here are from very old posts.

Please share new releases and/or Best mastering.

Their are many pressing of Jimi's Woodstock performance. You will note that no specific LP/CD is mentioned, mostly because people like the performance but have lots of different pressing to choose from. Sometimes hard to pick "The One". If you have a favorite release of this or any other song please share. This also includes your favourite audience recordings, different tapers and merges etc.

Many old dogs like me have been a fan since the late 60's. Although I buy each new release, I don't tend to give them the heavy duty scrunity, I did when I was younger.

I`m sharing the list to get some comments rolling on Live Jimi.on

As for pre-fame Jimi Hendrix, I love the live I'm A Man with Curtis Knight. I use it to compare for friends with Eric Clapton & The Yardbirds playing with Sonny Boy Williamson on Take It Easy.

You can hear both ready to morph into the guys we love so much.

No, I was editing out the concert dates. I missed those on my tablet.

I used the concerts dates to paste in with the songs actual date. Many songs people would share would only say Little Wing Concerts or a song from Winterland DISC 2. I tried to give the date of those songs.
For example BoG, BBC releases, Concerts, Purple Box, West Coast Seattle Boy, In Te West both versions etc. To helpif you may already have that version in your collection.

    All errors are mine.

I am fairly certain that, by memory, I know exactly what jhm is referring to.

I spent 40 years going back and forth about whether it is a tape issue, or an intentional Hendrix execution.

It sounds very much like a really bad tape warble (almost 3 or 4 seconds worth, perhaps), but I believe (again, after waffling for decades) that this is Jimi doing a "hammer run" on the frets with his right hand, while manipulating the whammy bar with his left. It's a startling effect, but I believe that it is an intentional effect.

Of course, I may very well be totally mistaken. Also, I don't have immediate access to the track presently, so I can't provide a time coordinate to see if it matches up with what jhm is referencing, but I suspect that it is the same item.

    OK -- I've got it.
(This is San Diego '69 Red House we're talking about here.)

Right at the beginning of the 2nd verse -- immediately following the first "Wait a minute something's wrong".

Maybe 3:35 in. (On the Purple Box reissue, anyway.)

If this isn't what jhm was talking about, well, then I'm an idiot, and I apologize for wasting time and bandwidth.

Quick question as I'm not as up to date on new Hendrix shows as I used to be. I was on a website yesterday and noticed a disc for sale of Hendrix playing live with the Isley Brothers dated 14 January 1964. Is this total bs or has something surfaced recently?

Don't take this to the bank, but it would not to be a leap of faith, especially with The Isley Brothers, that after 50 + years that almost all known activity with them would be know.

I believe that after Jimi hit the big time, that at this point in time, that they wouldn't have held anything back.

    But I don't really know.

October 11, 1968, San Francisco, CA, Winterland Arena

The second night of The Experience's brief tenure at the Winterland Arena. Whoever went to this show was blessed with having Jimi & crew wreck shop, even if some performances flag a little, and equipment issues happen throughout. Despite those facts, The Jimi Hendrix Experience never sound like they are mailing it in. They sound dedicated and as focused as they could be under the circumstances, which wasn't dire, but not quite optimal.

    Set one:

"Are You Experienced" - The ultimate live acid song, as the band brings on Virgil Gonzales to flute it up. The breakdown from 9 minutes to roughly 12 minutes is great. On paper it should be a better performance, though, as Jimi is too giving to the flute, while hanging back more than he should. Jimi's vocals on the last verse are killer. They soar! So yeah, the group comes out with a solid bang. 16:54

"Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" - Not very good. Fairly clumsy. I mean, yeah, it's the song and it goes off in places, yet it lacks a certain sparkle. 8:20

"Red House" - Note, they are following the pattern of the first night's first set, though so far we're not meeting those lofty heights, as this version is good; nothing is wrong with it, some powerful moments, but I doubt many would reach for this take if they just wanted to hear the song...but maybe so! 11:56

"Foxey Lady" - I had to put on the headphones to really give this one a listen. This is a pretty special version. Hendrix gives a series of pulloffs and whammy bar work throughout, in unexpected parts, especially leading into the verses. The solo really soars, though there are a couple of spots where it seems like equipment problems, as he loses his sustain. Nonetheless, it’s a shame we don’t have this iteration it in higher SQ. We've got mind-bending work here. 5:47

"This is America" - About as good as the first set on 10-10-1968, maybe better. I love how Jimi incorporates the theme song from “Bonanza” into the soup. Once he starts the "Star Spangled Banner," he plays the melody more straight through, which is more reminiscent of Woodstock than anything. He brings in “Taps” as a closer before going into "Purple Haze." 6:34

"Purple Haze" - Much more spirited than previous versions at Winterland. A great vocal performance, even doing the rare “Ohs and Ahs.” There is a small vocal flub, but it’s still delivered well. A super nice blazing version. All of the outro solos are pure gold. Feeling + shred. 6:04

    Set Two:

"Tax Free" - Now I know how Alan Douglas felt when he first but on this reel, like “Man, great playing by Jimi; but this stuff in the middle has got to go!” This is the version where the drum solo comes toward the beginning of the song. That’s one helluva long jam with Mitch and Noel. There are some genuine choice bits in this jam, as Noel throws out some interesting bass melodies. Unfortunately, Noels playing meanders, simply because he can't improv like Jimi. Hendrix comes back into the song playing Black Sabbath before Black Sabbath Black Sabbathed. Might as well stick with the Live the Winterland version. The BT tapes are the best source for the whole package. 20:32

"Spanish Castle Magic" – Jimi is a maniac during this solo. If you want spacey, Jimi gets way out there! This is pure jazz. I could hear Jimi’s work like this replacing John McLaughlin on Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew. So neat that Jimi repeats the standard studio solo licks going back into it, before the last verse. This version is worth it for the mad soloing. 11:04

"Like a Rolling Stone" – Beautiful figures from Jimi throughout. Sometimes the out of tune organ sound obtrusive, sometimes not. This rendition probably sums up the second night shows to perfection: very ambitious, yet missing the mark at times. Not even close to a wasted listen, though – Just one I might not return to soon. 11:34

"Lover Man" – The strangest version of this track out there. Jimi and The Experience keep the song great and tight. Jimi even plays around with the standard chords as the song opens. This organs keep on going, not necessarily sounding bad, but then later during, and after, the organ solo it just sounds creepy, like cobwebs creepy. So, imagine the lover man finally got caught, so he's singing this from a coffin. 6:10

"Hey Joe" – When Jimi sings “in the ground” during the first verse, and then plays the guitar lines beneath his voice, that’s what I call heavenly. The last solo rips! A smooth but odd version. Well worth the listen. 5:14

"Fire" - Really works with the organ. A classic version of a classic. Could this be a top-10 take of “Fire?” I could reach for this one when I wasn’t to hear the song and be satisfied. 4:44

"Foxey Lady" – An Excellent version! Jimi plays his ass off. About as good as any other top-shelf version. 5:13

"Purple Haze" - I wrote down one word: "Amazing!" 5:59

So, basically, the second set of the second night, ends like the first set of the first night begins, with classic hard-to-beat live versions, showing not only consistency, but arguably one of the nicest residences the Experience enjoyed in 1968 (at least the ones caught on tape).
