Speaking on sanitising Hendrix i heard once that Janie wanted a particular musician (that knew Jimi) to say that he didn't take drugs! I wish i could remember who it was.
I love my boot dvd with also early 69' footage of Jimi playing acoustic at home, touring Europe and also wishing a good morning goodbye to Uschi Obermaier!
Not sure if it is from the Generation Club or not but the question does bring up the fact that “A Wake At Generation” should be edited, restored and officially released:
And the version he'll play about 15 or so hours after this one is even worse. Speaking about IOW I wonder if anyone ever got a photo of Joe Strummer in the crowd checking out Jimi?
He was drunk in Stockholm. Apparently Jimi could play well on three tabs of acid, but alcohol, forget it.
The Univibe was calibrated for US current, that's why it kicks in more heavily on the European concerts on Hey Baby. I think the strech from Ezy Rider to Voodoo Child is painful, sounds like he couldn't wait to get out of there.
Ok. Thanks. Still not very informative as a live album title. It does go along with other obscure titles tho.
True, but who is Charlie? [as in volume / gonna need it etc] An answer it seems may be found in the recent issue of Jimpress #114 along with some questions regard the issuing of Hendrix on vinyl that vinyl buyers may be interested in, more so if answers and changes take place for the benefit of the customer!
This thread is perfect for the OCD Jimi head. It is also "boiling the ocean" a bit in its scope. But a thread of this scope may last quite a while.... The Website Funky Drummer lists is a good reference. I have provided a list view and seperated Jimi's appearances into 3 categories Live Shows, TV/Radio Shows, Jams for shows that are for the most part readily available for discussion. I also put in bold shows/tv shows/jams that have been officially released complete or nearly complete and/or not released but are readily available in very high quality sound. Personally I listened to the hits on the radio in the 70s and I started collecting Jimi from about 82 on but not OCD like (at least by my standards) until after Mitch died. I was at the last EH show he did in Portland and he looked extremely frail. If memory serves he only played on part of Angel and possibly one other song at the EH show. Something really hit me after Mitch died and kicked me into archeaology mode on Jimi. That time period just also happened to coincide with what I would call CTTs peak period 2009/2010. Since that time a bit more has surfaced plus some new things via official releases. Some of the lesser sounding shows can be tough to get through but many of those are also fascinating and stellar performances and of course some sound better than others. Plenty for discussion. 1966 1 Live Show 10/18/1966 Olympia Paris, France 1966 1 TV appearance 12/29/1966 Top Of The Pops London, England 1967 16 Live Shows 2/4/1967 Flamingo Club London England 2/25/1967 Corn Exchange Chelmsford, England 4/1/1967 Early Show Gaumont Ipswich Suffolk England 4/1/1967 Late Show Gaumont Ipswich Suffolk England 5/21/1967 Falkoner Centret Copenhagen, Denmark 5/24/1967 Stora Scenen, Grona Lund Stockholm, Sweden 6/18/1967 Monterey Pop Festival Monterey, California 8/27/1967 Saville Theater London England 9/4/1967 Stora Scenen, Grona Lund Stockhollm, Sweden 9/4/1967 Dans In, Grona Lund Stockholm, Sweden 9/10/1967 Early Show Stora Salen, Akademiska Forenigen, Lund Stockholm, Sweden 9/11/1967 Dans In, Grona Lund Stockholm, Sweden 9/11/1967 Stora Scenen, Grona Lund Stockholm, Sweden 10/9/1967 Olympia Paris, France 11/25/1967 Late Show Opera House Blackpool, England 12/22/1967 Grand & National Halls London England 1967 18 TV/Radio Shows 1/18/1967 Top of The Pops London England 1/30/1967 Pop North Manchester England 2/13/1967 Saturday Club London England 3/2/1967 Beat Club London England 3/18/1967 Studio 1, NDR Radiohause Hamburg, West Germany 3/28/1967 Saturday Club London England 3/30/1967 Top of The Pops London England 4/17/1967 Late Night Line Up London England 5/4/1967 Top of The Pops London England 5/10/1967 Top of The Pops London England 5/11/1967 Music Hall Paris France 5/18/1967 Beat Beat Beat Offenbach, West Germany 5/24/1967 Popside TV Show Stockholm, Sweden 9/5/1967 Radiohuset Stockholm, Sweden 10/6/1967 Top Gear London England 10/17/1967 Playhouse Theater London England 11/10/1967 Vitus Studio Bussum, Holland 12/15/1967 Playhouse Theater London England 1967 2 Jams 9/7/1967 Klub Filips Stockholm, Sweden (with Hanson and Karlson) 11/2/1967 Speakeasy London England (with John Mayal) 1968 54 Live Shows 1/7/1968 Early Show Tivolis Koncertsal Copenhagen Denmark 1/8/1968 Early Show Konserthuset Stockholm Sweden 1/29/1968 Late Show Olympia Paris France 2/3/1968 Early Show Winterland Arena San Francisco CA 2/3/1968 Late Show Winterland Arena San Francisco CA 2/4/1968 Late Show Fillmore Auditorium San Francisco CA 2/14/1968 Field House, Regis College Denver CO 2/16/1968 State Fair Music Hall Dallas TX 2/17/1968 Will Rogers Auditiorium Fort Worth TX 2/18/1968 Music Hall Houston TX 2/25/1968 Late Show Civic Opera House Chicago IL 2/28/1968 Early Show The Scene Milwaukee WI 2/28/1968 Late Show The Scene Milwaukee WI 3/2/1968 Late Show Hunter College New York NY 3/3/1968 Veterans Memorial Auditorium Columbus OH 3/10/1968 Early Show International Ballroom Hilton Hotel Washington DC 3/15/1968 Late Show Atwood Hall Worcester MA 3/19/1968 Early Show Capitiol Theater Ottawa Ontario 3/19/1968 Late Show Capitiol Theater Ottawa Ontario 3/26/1968 Late Show Public Music Hall Cleveland OH 4/2/1968 Paul Suave Arena Montreal Quebec 5/10/1968 Early Show Fillmore East New York NY 5/10/1968 Late Show Fillmore East New York NY 5/18/1968 Early Show Gulf Stream Race Track Hallendale FL 5/18/1968 Late Show Gulf Stream Race Track Hallendale FL 5/25/1968 Early Show Teatro Bramcaccio Rome Italy 5/25/1968 Late Show Teatro Bramcaccio Rome Italy 5/26/1968 Early Show Palasport Bologna Italy 5/30/1968 Hallenstadion Zurich Switzerland 5/31/1968 Hallenstadion Zurich Switzerland 7/6/1968 Wobern Abbey Bedfordshire England 8/3/1968 Moody Coliseum Dallas TX 8/4/1968 Early Show Sam Houston Coliseum Houston TX 8/10/1968 Late show Auditorium Theater Chicago IL 8/11/1968 Coloseum Ballroom Davenport IA 8/16/1968 Merriweather Post Pavillion Columbia MD 8/23/1968 Singer Bowl Queens NY 9/4/1968 Memorial Coliseum Phoenix AZ 9/7/1968 Pacific Coliseum Vancouver BC 9/8/1968 Coliseum Spokane WA 9/9/1968 Memorial Coliseum Portland OR 9/14/1968 Hollywood Bowl Hollywood CA 10/10/1968 Early Show Winterland Arena San Francisco CA 10/10/1968 Late Show Winterland Arena San Francisco CA 10/11/1968 Early Show Winterland Arena San Francisco CA 10/11/1968 Late Show Winterland Arena San Francisco CA 10/12/1968 Early Show Winterland Arena San Francisco CA 10/12/1968 Late Show Winterland Arena San Francisco CA 11/2/1968 Minneapolis Auditorium Minneapolis MN 11/16/1968 Boston Garden Boston MA 11/27/1968 Rhode Island Auditorium Providence RI 11/28/1968 Early Show Philharmonic Hall New York NY 11/30/1968 Cobo Arena Detroit MI 12/1/1968 Coliseum Chicago IL 1968 1 TV Show 6/5/1968 It Must Be Dusty TV Show Hertfordshire England 1968 5 Jams 1968??? It is amazing that after having managed the Hendrix catalogue for over twenty years, Experience Hendrix has not issued the 1969 San Diego and Los Angeles concerts in their entirety.
Ain't that the damn truth! Ridiculous, actually. Both shows are stellar performances with really minor flaws.
And both would fit on one CD each (though I think LA may need a bit of talk and audience trimming, one version I have runs 82 minutes, but the music gets in under 80).
Instead of reissuing that bizarre "In The West" concoction several years ago, EH should have issued these two concerts as "In The West: The California Concerts."
They have already released a lot of San Diego on the new version of In the West...so I doubt they will return to it...and they have also pilfered from LA Forum for box set stuff...so I am not sure they will return to these for full releases. Does anyone know the actual story for dropping RAH tracks from the revised In the West? My thinking was they must have had a license from Goldstein for the Purple Box versions, but then when things got sour over the RAH deal - Goldstein may have not granted it to them again for In the West? **I did a search and found this subject discussed** In short, no one knows for sure?
It's got to be either a rights thing or they purposely held back the tracks knowing a full Royal Albert Hall CD/Video was forthcoming at the time (but of course has since fallen apart).
Still would be nice to get Foxy Lady from San Diego on *ahem* next box set just to finally get it out. The only things they've released from LA were the three tracks that were mixed for the 1969 album, there are still four LONG songs/jams left to be reissued (plus Foxy Lady from the Concerts CD), so I could see them sort of overlooking the ones from the boxes to put it out as a whole show. Heck, they could do a Dagger "LA Forum 1969/1970" to show the difference between a good soundboard and a so-so audience recording. Re; RAH-They had the whole London Times brouhaha in 2006 to muddy the waters yet again. I seem to remember the Goldstein situation going south before the In the West reissue came out but I know the recent suit didn't conclude until 2015 or so.
They definitely would have to do a bit of editing. Tax Free is edited by a few minutes on the original Douglas release. My favorite lie is the liner notes to this show stating the reason Jimi can't be heard on the "rap" at the end of VCSR is because of temporary mic failure. The reality is Jimi is going on about God and spirituatlity and my guess is Douglas felt that had no place on a mainstream release from a rock icon. The audio is clearly present on unofficial sources.
You're more than likely right, about them not returning to it. That extra disc on "Life Lines" is probably as close as we'll ever get. Regarding the Royal Albert Hall stuff, most likely the lawsuits prevented EH using those tracks on ITW.
So it was a strange decision then to release it at such a fraught time! A release that I guess for them was not really for the hardcore, but a live comp of good stuff for those who happen to be looking for a Hendrix live comp...of which there were none readily available "down the shops". Those Albert Hall tracks were always a point of contention - even back to the original release that deliberately fudged their origin...
For those who wish to compile their own CDs, all of the San Diego and LA Forum 1969 concerts have been released officially (except one track*) across a multitude of releases: San Diego 69 Fire (Hendrix In The West 2011) Hey Joe (Stages) Spanish Castle Magic (Hendrix In The West 2011) Red House (Purple box) I Don't Live Today (Hendrix In The West 2011) Foxy Lady (Truth & Emotion - Purple Haze Records)* Purple Haze (purple box/Voodoo Child compilation) Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) (Hendrix In The West 2011) LA Forum 69 Tax Free (Lifelines VI) Foxy Lady (The Jimi Hendrix Concerts) Red House (Lifelines VI) Spanish Castle Magic (Lifelines VI) The Star Spangled Banner/Purple Haze (West Coast Seattle Boy) I Don't Live Today (purple box/Voodoo Child compilation) Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) (Lifelines VI) Sunshine Of Your Love (Lifelines VI)
