Jimmy looked bad at Live Aid. Real bad. He wasn't playing up to par either. Robert didn't sound too good. That is what ruined LZ's set.

He's kind of right. But it's similar to blaming Kenney Jones for failing to play like Keith Moon while ignoring the fact that the guitarist is whacked out of his mind.

  4. Hardy an explicit blame (or blast) there. Or did I miss a bit?

"Oh no, he ruined our set because he messed up the intro to 'Rock & Roll'." Please, leave it out. That would have been a minor hiccup if Page and Plant had been prepared.

This is the blast in the piece!

“It was a disaster, really. Robert wasn’t match-fit with his voice and Jimmy was out of it, dribbling. It wasn’t my fault it was crap,”

Are you implying that this clickbait article from a clickbait website might have a clickbait headline? :D

I seem to remember Jimmy's horrid guitar tone ruining it for me.

    "We had two hours’ rehearsal"

    That'll be it

  10. Indeed. With so little rehearsal time, Jimmy Page not happy about the drummer being there and both Page and Plant not in fine form, I don't think any drummer could have done the job properly. Page and Plant could always easily blame the new guy if it wasn't any good.

Not a drummer but is the beginning of 'Rock & Roll' difficult to play? I thought Page always blamed Collins for his poor timing on 'Stairway' so this is a new 'blame' so to speak!

They couldn't do a 3 song acoustic set to sidestep the drummer issue? Others did acoustic sets there.

I think Jimmy has also blamed his tech for giving him a poorly tuned guitar. I think it was down to Jimmy's nerves and being drunk in that scorching heat.

That quote is by Collins, so it seems more like the headline should have been, "Phil Collins Defends His LZ Performance at Live Aid."

  14. Pagey was drunk and coked out, he only has himself to blame

Nobody is blameless for that subpar performance. Was Phil Collins really the right drummer, style-wise, to fill in for Zeppelin? Or was he the drummer for publicity reasons? Phil was in a no-win situation, and perhaps he was pressured, but I think he should have declined that particular invitation at that point in time.

Yeah, well...no surprise. Phil's time with Clapton was a career lowlight for EC...

There were 2 drummers playing that day. Did the other guy play it right? I wonder if they were recorded on separate tracks; it would be quite interesting to compare the drum parts.

Led Zeppelin didn't play Live Aid. John Bonham died well before 1985.

As a fan of both bands at the time, I remember being surprised that Phil was drumming at all with Led Zeppelin. His style works nicely on Plant's first solo album so maybe this is why he was asked to drum? But to think of him as anything like Bonham is just madness, so I've never understood why he was asked in the first place. I've never heard the story as to why Jimmy would agree at all! The whole band was a wreck that day.

The whole thing was a mess but why was Phil playing with them? Why did they need two drummers? His ego needed to be on the stage with them. He was way out of time if you watch the shots of him playing. Why did a bass player appear during stairway? A big mess.

Pagey looked like being somewhere in the stratosphere and there wasn't any glue between the musicians. It sounded unrehearsed and just bad. I'd never blame old Phil alone.

And to think they could have asked Bonham's son to play drums...…. :D:D:D

Jimmy getting into a fight with the mic stand pretty much speaks for itself.

Yes, a lot of people have trouble figuring out the timing. How to count it.
