Joel (no Ethan) writes and directs this new version of the oft told tale.

Just 5-6 years ago there was a semi-big budget version with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. I didn't think it was that good. My favorite film version is still the 1971 one directed by Roman Polanski.

Same here. One of the best Shakespeare adaptations I've seen.

Polanski and the Welles version for me. There are several from the last 20 years which are all too literal and feature the latest pretty faces, to try and engage the high school audience being forced to watch.

This Coen version promises a welcome departure.

B&W and a 4:3 aspect ratio! I don't know why but I'm kinda excited about that.

Looks really good, will definitely watch this but probably at home.

I like Orson's Scottish version, pre dubbing in English accents, and I love the BBC one with Nicol Williamson in the title role. I thought the Polanski was very good, too. This could be good, too bad I don't have Apple TV.

Denzel will certainly have the gravitas to play the part. Polanski and Welles' versions are two of the finest. Coen projects rarely disappoint.

I saw a longer trailer before "West Side Story" yesterday, and it looked great. I'm really looking forward to this. Macbeth was the play that got me into Shakespeare back in school and made me a life-long fan. Polanski's is still my favourite film version of the play.

I bought a ticket for the 27th, and I'm really looking forward to it. Kurzel's version with Fassbender and Cotillard disappointed me a bit, because the main characters were too depressed for my taste. I hope this new one improves on that.

I saw it yesterday and thought it was great. Excellent performances by all and a very cool expressionistic look. Lots of light and shadow, using the full potential of a b/w film. And the 4:3 frame added nicely to the claustrophobic setting of the scenes in narrow spaces. I will surely watch it again at some point.

I'm looking forward to seeing it. Here's an interview with the cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel on why they went with B&W and how he uses tones to help tell the story. He first worked with the Coen Bros. on "Inside Llewyn Davis." They used to work almost exclusively with Roger Deakins, I wonder why that changed...not to take anything away from Delbonnel, who is obviously extremely skilled.

Fantastic. The cinematography and sound are first rate, Oscar noms. Denzell is great and Frances might just have an Oscar for this. It's kind of arty, but not self-consciously so. No more than, say, Olivier's Richard III. The opening with the witches should give you the creeps. So glad I saw it on the big screen.

Based on the playing time, it must be heavily cut, which doth displease me mightily. (I taught it for 17 years to sophomores in high school, so it’s practically memorized.) Still, I’ll probably watch it and shout invectives at the screen!:)

Your suspicion is correct. I said this over in the 'last movie you saw in a theater' thread:

"The trimming of the original text makes it lose some emotional heft - instead, we go directly from major plot point scene to major plot point scene. But something has to give, I suppose."
