Ban him? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't he the only drummer in their history? He's been there for the whole ride!

Except (AFAIK) Bun E. Carlos still gets paid for Cheap Trick concerts even though he doesn't play.

This article claims that Kramer is paying his replacement, which seems bizarre. If they wanted him to play and he declined, then I could possibly see them asking him to pay for his replacements (if they wanted to be total dicks), but if they're saying "You're not good enough to play with us anymore", then isn't it up to them to pay his replacement?

I feel like there's something missing from the story.

He has to pay out of pocket a replacement drummer at a rate of $20,000 a week for performances and $10,000 a week for rehearsals.

    man that is cold blooded.

That's exactly what I was thinking but in Cheap Trick's case it was as much about Robin being mad at Bun as it was about Bun's back limiting him to shorter sets. The bigger difference is Cheap Trick remains a reliable, creative force and is able to play at a high level where Aerosmith has become a soap opera of dysfunction. Having Kramer audition for his spot in the band is disgraceful. Especially considering the health issues the other members have suffered in recent years. Didn't Perry collapse on stage recently? Tyler looks like he stepped out of a tomb or off the set of Tales From the Crypt. Tom Hamilton had cancer. What a ridiculous band.

However the drum tech that has jumped in to help is getting paid fairly well.....knew I should have stuck in less at school.

Wow. If true, very disappointing turn of events. He's been in the band 50 friggin' years!

Just to look at it from the other point of view:*
Would you want him playing if he could not keep up through the entire show?
They are probably paying him his entire cut and the pay for the back up is out of that (much larger) cut.

    * I have no inside information other than I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express when I saw them last summer.

Is Joey still getting a salary for shows that isn't a part of? maybe is where the money is coming from?

Good Lord, that band gives new meaning to the term "trainwreck." I can't believe they're trying to make him pay for his replacement.

Ah, maybe that's the deal. That is at least not bat-poop crazy, but ya never know with these guys.

That would make sense. If he's getting paid, and not playing, it's not unreasonable that he pay for a replacement, I guess. Certainly not as unreasonable as asking him to pay out of pocket.

I always understood (from people that had met him) that Joey was a particularly unlikeable person. If true, then he won’t get any sympathy from me.

I presume there is a contract in place that requires him to make these payments? If so, why on earth did he sign it?

Just because some people may have told you he's "unlikeable" doesn't mean that he shouldn't be treated fairly and respectfully by people he's worked with for 50 years.

I recently read his autobiography and he seems like a complicated guy who's had some difficult scrapes over the years. I think he may actually have some form of PTSD, although I don't remember all the details. I hope they get this straightened out somehow.

Just surfed around that site where this was reported. Seems like every story is about some aging rock star and their health problems. Maybe it IS better to burn out....
