After a couple of decades of Alice’s Restaurant, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles became our annual Thanksgiving entertainment. Still is. To hell with the NFL.

I think I liked him best in "Stripes" though he doesn't have a huge role in that. "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" is, of course, a classic. I wasn't a big fan of "Uncle Buck" as it was a little too calculated, but it was okay. Outside of that, he didn't make a lot of great movies. Someone mentioned "The Great Outdoors" and I'd agree that that movie had its moments.

It seems like Chris Farley kind of tried to model his personae as an actor a bit after John Candy (and, no, not because they were both heavy set). They were the same kind of goofy, awkward guys in a lot of their movies and it made them lovable. Maybe that's what I don't like about "Uncle Buck"; Candy was a little too edgy and flat out mean in some parts of it.

  7. It is a shame he didn't have much quality control, because he was a real talent who could do a lot more than the dumb comedies he usually appeared in (and one of which he was on the set of when he died). C'est la vie.

Isn't that cool? Even a young kid recognizes JC on two levels. Nice show of respect.

I talked with a guy with a Harold Ramis Film School shirt last week.

    He was a student!

The fact that John Candy looked that fan in the eyes and said "Thank you very much , I appreciate that" pretty muchs shows what type of person John was

Me too. I just about crapped my pants when I saw an Orange Whip on a drink menu a couple of years ago.

I love every movie JC was in. I have watched them numerous times. The Great Outdoors is at the top of the list. Lots of folks say it is a dumb movie. Well to that I say...……..XXXXXX.

"Who's Harry Crumb" is another totally dumb Candy movie that I like a lot. Basically, I'll watch and enjoy about anything he's in.

We watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles every Thanksgiving. I read that Steve Martin said it was his favorite film that he's been in.

I grew up on SCTV. John was great on that show. Love his comedies but also liked his short appearance as the colourful Dean Andrews in JFK - "Kennedy's deader than that crab meat".
