Slippin' and Slidin' has quite a bit of energy, and is a fun song.

The horns are great, as is the sax solo. However, there have been similar brass arrangements on previous songs. And, it's not dissimilar to the Little Richard original.

It's all done very well. However, looking at the album as a whole, perhaps there could be more variety in arrangements.

One of the better songs on the album. It sounds like fun, nothing to skip but also nothing to go for.

For me at least my ratings are of how these recordings are as covers and not of the songs themselves - most of which can't touch Lennon's own writing IMO

Oddly though , Lennon wasn't at his best writing rock and roll songs...but he sure could sing 'em.

Terrific vocal, love the use of the horns. Nothing extraordinary, but very good.

Side one got off to a great start and then sort of petered out. Side two gets off to an even better start, a blast of raw energy, and a fully committed rock and roll vocal from John.

Rock & Roll songs are more about the singing and playing than about the writing. At his best Lennon was always going for something more musically interesting than a standard rock and roll song. Paul was actually stronger at those (I Saw Her Standing There, Can't Buy Me Love, She's A Woman, I'm Down, Back In The USSR, Lady Madonna, Get Back and Oh Darling were their most "pure rock and roll" efforts).

Edit: Actually John did have One After 909 in that vein - but it is telling that they mothballed it for 7 years.

I love this performance. John in the red jumpsuit looking like Elvis from Hell with the two faced back up performers as a nice F U to Sir Lew.
As far as the album goes Slipping & Sliding might be my favorite performance and I think the best rendition of the song with Buddy Holly's a very close second

It rocks but is not anything resembling a "rock and roll song" as such terms were defined in the 50s and as compiled on the Rock & Roll album. Does not resemble any standard "rock and roll" chord progression

I might throw in This Boy
"Rock & Roll Songs" as defined in the 50s did not all rock.

I must be reading a different thread. Except for a couple of tracks people are crapping all over this album.

Ok, I get it. You have a good point actually. There's probably some early ones like Little Child maybe. And You Can't Do That.

    About the song:

    From Slippin' and Slidin'

""The first time I heard this Little RIchard track, a friend of mine imported it from Holland. It came out in Europe first. Slippin’ And Slidin’ was the b-side of Long Tall Sally, which is the first Little Richard song I ever heard and was also recorded by Buddy Holly, so that covers a little bit of both. It was a song I knew. It was easier to do songs that I knew than trying to learn something from scratch, even if I was interested in the songs."
