  1. I like Rock n Roll flaws and all. Why? Cause it’s clear John is having fun.

When I listen to it I'm reminded of John and Yoko's appearance on The Mike Douglas Show ' from a few years earlier where they played with Chuck Berry. John is obviously very pleased to be singing with one of his idols and he's totally into it.
    Chuck : " Johnny ?"
    John : " Yes , Chuck? "
    Chuck : " Let's be good "
    John : " Right !"
And they launch into a spirited rendition of ' Johnny B Goode '
This clip also includes Berry's priceless reaction to Yoko 's vocalizations.

One of the few songs that the Beatles covered that was dull. Or at least it was that day on the BBC.

I gotta say first time I listened to this album I shut it off at Ain't That A Shame. Tried about a decade later and got through it but was not into it. I picked up a copy in anticipation of this thread and as we've been going through it , I'm starting to like it more and more. If you take it on it's terms, it's a fun album

It's The Fireballs (aka Jimmy Gilmer and The Fireballs), overdubbed in 1962. They did "Sugar Shack" and "Bottle Of Wine".

Released on the Rock n Roll album, 17 February, 1975.

A fine cover of a classic song by one of John’s favourite early inspirations.

This is a no-frills straight-ahead version that thrills in its simplicity. Every element sounds authentic: from the incessant tom-thumping drums, acoustic rhythm forging ahead & the simple piano & bass accompaniment. The electric chords that crash in after the chorus add a brief injection of power, & the lead guitar solo at the end could’ve been lifted from any number of early rock n roll songs; & over the top we have John slipping effortlessly into his spot-on Buddy impression, hiccups & all.

And it’s all over in a breath over 2 minutes.

Another fine contribution to this inconsistent album.

    4/5

Yes, this rendition is less risky and more formulaic than other tracks of the album; but at least in this case, less innovation led to a sterling result. John does a respecful imitation of one of his rock & roll heroes, taking care of details such as the drumming style and the guitar solo in the middle. The concluding guitar solo is a suitable addition, keeping a traditional, restrained sound. In any case, this is one of my favorite songs of the album.

There was no way no how Lennon could have or would have botched ' Peggy Sue '.However there is no way no how he could have bettered it either. ' Peggy Sue ' is one of the greatest rock and roll songs of the 50s written by and sung by a true pioneer.
Having said that, Lennon does indeed do a fine cover , yet another highlight of this great album.

"Peggy Sue"- A pretty faithful cover and Lennon doing his best Buddy impersonation. It's a great song and you can hear the love that John had for it. I wish he would have done a lesser known Buddy song. Maybe "Peggy Sue Got Married"? It's still great and he is doing the song that probably meant the most to him. 4/5

With a few exceptions. The Ballad of John and Yoko is great.
